  1. When we first hit the road our dentist gave us a copy of all our X-rays and we always asked for them when visiting dentists on the road. Some were able to use those instead of taking new. Now that many are digitized you can ask them to email them to you or the dentist you wish to visit. While in North Carolina DH broke a tooth and she emailed all x-rays to us.

Each state dental board sets up its own requirements for dental education and practices. Some states that boarder each other may have similar licensing and practice requirements? Kind of like lawyers they can only practice in the state they are licensed in. We have found in the past Alabama and Florida to be less stringent with their requirements but both places we went to friends dentists. We had a bad experience in Oregon where we found this website http://obd.oregonlookups.com/ to evaluate Dentists before visiting. Each state has their own look up procedure some on-line some over the phone or in writing only. It saved us from going to a dentist that either didn't have a current license or had board actions against them.

This website may be of assistance for your search in Arizona: AZ Board of Dentist License Look Up

Some dental schools have free and or low cost clinics, if you are near Tempe, check ASU to see if they have a community program.

Our dentist in Arizona just retired so we will be looking for new one. We don't have dental insurance and he didn't require though encouraged x-rays. He was very sensitive to individual income limitations. He could have been grandfathered into the x-ray requirement? We did go see him every year for cleanings, sometimes twice a year if we were in the area and he catered to the senior crowd. He had been practicing for many years and was a conservative practitioner. ie if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Many dentists are into cosmetic dentistry as that is were the money is and thru x-rays they can generate more business on one hand and on the other can compare changes from visit to visit and potentially nip a problem in the bud. One hygienist told me the X-rays are a CYA for dental practices against frivolous litigation as sometimes the patient doesn't always know and or provide detailed facts about their dental health history.

More and more study on the subject has shown a correlation between oral care and ones general health ie plaque on the teeth may lead to plaque in the arteries***.

***Arterial plaque is a deposit of fat, cholesterol, calcium and scar tissue that develops in the artery wall. Plaque in the mouth is a bacterial film that builds up on teeth. While the two types of plaque are very different, patients with gum disease do seem to have nearly twice the risk of also having heart disease. https://www.sharecare.com/health/vascular-disease/plaque-arteries-same-dental-plaque

  2. Welcome to the forum lizobiker.

I just looked at their website http://www.forestriverinc.com/product-details.aspx?LineID=335&ModelID=2858#Main gallery and love the floorplan for the 38RE. Lots of seating for football games LOL and nice big kitchen island counter.

We started fulltiming in 2001 and have seen a lot of fivers. It depends on your pocketbook and how you travel. Your first couple of years will be a lot different then your later years as you work out all the kinks and figure out your routine. When the powder rooms came out in motorhomes I thought what a waste of space but now that we have been on the road awhile a powder room would be nice as we wake up at different times and getting dressed in the morning away from the bedroom would be a nice feature for the one who sleeps in. ;) Also if you have friends or family visiting a lot its nice to have the powder room instead of them going through the bedroom. You can just close the pocket door to the bedroom. And for those that don't share well or have different standards "his and hers" bathrooms are nice.:rolleyes: The other option for that space is a HUGE pantry great for storage. Lastly if one or the other is ill the extra facilitys are a great convenience. A calling card we received from a fellow rv'er had the quote "Drinks 6, feeds 4 and sleeps 2"

Another place to ask owners about their rv is the owners group website: http://www.forestriverforums.com/forums/f71/new-river-stone-94299.html

Sometimes they let potential owners participate or even just looking at their comments may be helpful. I couldn't find one quickly for the Luxe.

The Luxe https://augusta-rv.com/luxe/ floorplans are similar to many on the market so it would be the cost, features and benefits comparison.

Good luck with your search, the internet is a great place to start and you will love your full time adventure

  3. It's still a work in progress, but feel free to check out what's been going on in my rig--mainly in the kitchen. I'm slowly getting the content caught up to where I am now.

This link will take you directly to the posts on the kitchen remodel, while the link in my signature will take you to the main site. Newest stuff first, so if you want to follow along from the beginning head to the bottom of the last page.

Just looked at your kitchen remodel link. Thanks for posting GREAT ideas and well done.

  4. Follow UP: We took the fiver back to the shop and they worked on it for a couple of days. The bedroom and living room slides are fine but the kitchen slide still went out a little. They filled the pump with almost a qt of fluid and I asked if there was a leak the tech said after 13 years you can expect some evaporation. The economical solution for us was slide out locks. We bought 2 for less than $100. We have moved a couple of times and feel the low fluid level may of had something to do with it and possibly air in the lines which may have worked out after using them a few times. I only use the lock on one slide now. If you choose this solution for slide out creep be sure to ALWAYS remove the locks before attempting to put out the slide or else you will damage your slide motor. A friend had built in slide out locks on his fifth wheel and forgot to unlock them before putting out his slide and damage his slide motor.

  5. Thank you all for your suggestions.

It is a hydraulic system and we will be taking it back to the place that did the bedroom slide repair on Monday but I wanted to know if there could be more than just an "adjustment" needed.

Is there more than one valve per slide?

  6. We have a 13 year old triple slide fifth wheel and the two main slides were ajar when we went to get it out of storage where we had parked it for 3 weeks with the slides in. We took a week trip to check everything out before we leave for the summer and I just pulled the slides back in but the two main slides are creeping out at the bottom about 2 inches when driving down the road.

The bedroom slide doesn't seem to be affected? This winter the bedroom slide was taken out to repair damage from a water leak. Could that affect the system? If so why would that slide not creep out also?

Has anyone had slide issues? If so what was your resolutions?

    Thank you.

  7. JM, putting on my nurse hat here I think you reading too much into the WebMD article. Most americans get plenty of protein. In fact most get twice the amount they need. Remember, that the recommendation is only for three ounces of meat per serving. Very few people only eat three ounces per serving. We also have other sources of protein such as eggs, nuts, beans, whole grains.

Generally, protein is not going to give you more energy in the nature of a stimulant such as caffeine. Consumed proteins function to be broken down and for needed amino acids and muscle maintaenance and replacement. Excess protein is converted over to fat for storage or carbohydrate to be consumed for energy. Between protein, fat and carbohydrates, carbs provide the most direct energy. However the recommendation is that you eat balanced meals. The Recommended Daily Allowance of protein is .08 grams per Kilogram of weight. Translated this means that a 150lb person needs about 54 grams of protein per day. Protein adds up fast. For instance, 1 egg has 6 grams. 4 ounces of chicken has about 35 grams. One-half cup of navy, pinto, black or kidney beans offers between 7 and 8 grams of protein.

Protein supplements really come into play with serious weight lifters who target 1 gram of protein per lb of body weight per day or more. Whey is an excellent source of protein although nutritionists stress that it is best to get your calories and nutrients from whole foods where possible.

The other time when supplementation is important is when you are not getting you recommended nutrients from a regular diet or if you are recovering from illness or injury. Often older people can lose their appetite, ability to chew, swallow, etc and they begin to lose weight. Here liquid supplements are helpful as they can be nutrient dense in an easy to consume form. However, even here you will not typically find just whey protein recommended. While meal replacement drinks may contain significant protein they will also contain fat and carbohydrates.

Thank you I appreciate the info.

  8. On decaf, you might want to think about that again as there are options today that many have not heard of and that I'm comfortable with. The reason we are still drinking coffee is that you can get some pretty good coffee that is decaffeinated using the fairly new CO2 process that doesn't add anything toxic to the beans or hurt the flavor.

I started buying some from a place in New Jersey that I heard about while researching espresso machines. They offer two varieties that are in my opinion as good as regular coffee.

It is also available on Amazon, the Amazon bags are a bit older than ones ordered direct but are still well within the shelf life.

On protein powders, I tried several and didn't care for them much as I couldn't see that they made any difference for my issues. The person that suggested (a professional nutritionist) I try some had very specific suggestions on things to look for and things to avoid and good reasons for each, which of course I can't recall now that I need them. I hope others here have some good information for you.

Thank you for the decaf web links, I will definitely have to rethink decaf coffee.

  9. My DW has been using powder daily for a year. After research she found "Naked Whey". It is only pure protein, nothing else added. She orders online from Amazon, and has it shipped to us where ever. I have been making her a shake every morning for the last year, to start her day.

    In a blender:

1/2 banana, cut small, added first

2-3 tablespoons of Laura Scudder's Old Fashioned Peanut Butter. (It is only peanuts, and less than 1% salt.) Stirred to mix,

    then keep in refer.

2 scoops of Naked Whey, (scoop comes in the container)

1/3 cup of frozen blue berries, we try to find the 5# bag at Walmart

and about 1/2 cup of Almond milk

In that order, it does not blow the powder around the blender too much, blend for 30 seconds.

It works for her, with her digestive issues from long term side effects, and is helping to maintain her weight gain since ending recent round of chemo last year.

Thank you for the brand name and the recipe.

  10. My question: Does anyone here supplement their diets with protein powders, protein shakes etc? If so what brand and why did you choose it?

I recently gave up my morning coffee after 40+ years. I had started slowly making it weaker then drinking less then went to caffeine free herbal teas for my morning hot drink. I miss the coffee flavor but I feel the caffeine was affecting my sleep and didn't want to go decaf. I do feel better but miss the energy from caffeine.

Popular thought is that with a well balanced diet you don't need supplements. I am the first to admit our diet is not balanced and with DH, a very finicky eater, probably never will be. A friend of mine uses a whey protein powder and seems like the energizer bunny with an abundance of energy so I started researching and found that active adults may not be getting enough protein. http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-and-supplements/lifestyle-guide-11/protein-powder?page=1

I also found some powders can be very expensive, highly caloric and full of preservatives.

  13. We have decided to remodel instead of buy new and have been making little changes all summer. I found this show on HGTV called Tiny House Nation and many of the ideas can work in an RV.

I just watched a recent episode that had an incinerating toilet? http://tinyhousefor.us/tiny-house-spotlight/perfect-tiny-home/

I have never seen one before but thought what an idea you only have to empty the ash every 6 mos or so?

I found several websites explaining how they work: https://www.google.com/search?q=incinerator+toilet&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

FWIW. That's for registration renewal. Yesterday, I got a form letter telling me to get a state inspection first and mail it in. My registration renewal is due in April. No info on out of state procedure was given in the mailer. I called Polk DMV this AM and Mandy told to just go to the website and renew as usual. The first screen allows you to opt-out of the state inspection by being out of state and a

RVer. Easy-peasy, like Jack said. No need for form VTR-272-B on renewal. Still needed on first time TX registration though. HTHs rockin'

    Thank you for posting.

We just got our notice for renewal due in April and will be out of state, good to know we can self certify/opt-out of state inspection and renew online.
