  1. I also have a Garmin 890 on the left side of the steering wheel.  It might get in the way with a smaller vehicle, but works fine with an F150.  The 890 has built in WiFi so you do not need a computer to do updates.  You can even use the built in browser as long as you have a WiFi source.

I'd include a photo of the dash placement, but I can no longer add images.

  2. While I haven't used them, others have suggested R&B Septic Services, 1360 North Moon Mountain Avenue
Quartzsite, Arizona 85346, 928-927-3887.  I have seen other trucks moving through the LTVAs.

  3. I believe the Houghton ACs sold & installed by RecPro are made in Australia, although a modified version using 120V (Australia uses 240V).

By the way, if you are replacing a Dometic AC that uses a combined AC & furnace thermostat, you will need to change the thermostat - the Houghton had the temperature controls on the AC and is not compatible with the electronics used by Dometic.

I spent a lot of time researching the differences between TX, FL, SD and such.

All of them require DL in that state. There are 7 states where you can register a vehicle without having a DL from that state and neither of the 3 are in that list.

TX is not an option as they require annual technical inspection. You gotta go there. Too far for me. FL is much closer. You do need a DL to register apparently. The rest looks straightforward. No annual car tax like in VA. Actually that will look much better, if I get pulled over, my DL matches my tags and hence no problem.

No annual inspection in FL.  No car tax. Cheap registration. Cheaper than VA. I am looking at this gig in FL and it's 50/50 at this point if I move there or not.

Not sure what advantages SD has over FL.  FL is much closer to me, from mid-atlantic and I go there in the middle of the winter when things get brutal here, which they sometimes do.

I think I will register the vehicle in VA for now but the next time I go to FL, will set it up there.  VA sales tax is 4% versus 6% in FL. And once I apply for a title, since I already own it, I can't image they will charge me their 6% a second time? Since it's just a transfer, or am not understanding something?

While each state has its rules, when I moved from Washington state to New York, when registering my vehicle they charged me the difference between the two state's sales tax.

I'm a musician with a pretty good ear... I don't know what the compression is you're talking about.  The music sounds fine to me.

I don't know how much classical you listen to, but it is pretty obvious.  Might not be as much a problem on other types of music.

My experience is based on I teaching sound design for 32 years, designed theatre sound systems and designing the sound for many musicals.

  6. I have a Garmin 890, which is a modified Android tablet that can be set for car or RV - You add the specs for your RV.  No problems other than here in the East is is almost always warning me that there is a sharp curve ahead...

  7. I just finished The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives In Your Home, by Joseph Fink.  An interesting read for those that enjoy the combination of a ghost story & history.  " A funny, terrifying, and unpredictable slice of Night Vale's macabre history." — Kirkus Reviews (starred review)"

Well the cost of doing 2 test (one pre test and one at-home test at the border) means not going to do it for a trip to enjoy a day in Vancouver or Victoria BC, so common before the pandemic during the summer in Western Washington.

Check with a local Walgreens.  Ours here in upstate  NY will do either Rapid (ID Now) test which is not on the Canada acceptable list or the PCR which is for free.  One problem - the typical results of the PCR test is 2-3 days, and Canada wants the test within 3 days of entry...

Utah Hwy 95 from Hanksville to Blanding Utah (and then to Cortez). This is east exit from Capitol Reef via Hwy 24. Spectacular canyon thru red rock walls that equal Capitol Reef. Turn offs to Hite and Bull Frog Marina both have fuel, otherwise it's 125 miles of no service. I just noticed on the map that this borders the new Bears Eyes NM which is on the east side of the road. Also goes by Natural Bridges. East end is part of the Trail of Ancients with some ruins. Also Hwy 261 to Moki Dugway branches off with many boondocking spots for many miles of road. Including one of our top five spots. Bottom of Moki is Valley of Gods and road to Mexican Hat/Monument Valley and to Goosenecks SP.

Bears ears is on our todo list.

    2) CO Hwy 141 which comes off of Hwy 50 south of Grand Junction running west then turning south to Naturita CO. Continues south but we did not go that way. This is not really a road to anywhere but is is bordered by a large river and giant cliffs to a mesa on the south side of the west leg. Cliffs reminded me of Yosemite and we drove it in a light rain and there were many waterfalls off the mesa top.

There are reportedly many camping spots on top of the mesa which is NF land. Some NF camps and boondocking. South side of mesa is a uranium mining district with active mines. You can get to the top of the mesa via several access roads, which we did not take. It's on my list of spots to revisit.

A couple of stops for photographers in the area are Mule Canyon off UT 95 for the "House on Fire" ruin, and Cigarette Springs Road off UT 261 above the Moki Dugway for a hike to "Fallen Roof Ruin".   Both are reasonable hikes (Fallen Roof is a bit more difficult, at least at the start, and finding the ruin), and well worth it.

  10. Just finished All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr & highly recommend it.  As to Lee Child fans that have Amazon's Kindle Unlimited, check out the Mark Dawson John Milton series.  Not quite up to Lee Child, but pretty good & free.

For those interested in the Southwest, I enjoyed both The Monkey Wrench Gang & Desert Solitudes by Edward Abbey.

Since giving up TV, I read over 200 books per year & at least 100 audio books checked out from the library.  The NYC library is open to any resident of New York State, and has a huge collection of books, both audio & standard.

  11. An interesting book.  I haven't seen the movie, but the book was well worth reading.  I've met some of the individuals interviewed (I spent 4 winters in Quartzsite) and it is an accurate portrayal of the area & folks.   A sector of RVers that many haven't met and don't even know exists. I suspect that Amazon & some of the commercial camp workers are not pleased with the book.
