  1. Hahaha. Well while I have not yet had the pleasure (or dis-) of hooking up to a gooseneck, I do have a small trailer for dump runs that I have to get out several times to make sure I'm close enough. I will certainly be investing in cameras and developing some sort of reference system that works for me when it comes to hitching up. Let the fun begin!
  2. I currently don't have anything. I have been doing a lot of reading and talking. I was thinking the gooseneck may be easier to install than the RV 5th wheel? Anyway, I just need to find the right truck. The rest will follow, haha.
  3. Hello All, I am all lined up with a loan and insurance. One big question is what would be better for HDT RV'ing. 6x4 or 6x2? I have found some Pro Stars that are less than 500k for a good price. The only thing is they are mostly 6x2. I have been reading the resale on those is not as good? I know a lot of you have singled yours so if I did that it wouldn't make much difference I guess. Next question. A friend showed me his new set up for his 5th wheel. He switched over to a Reese Goosebox. Have you heard of that and would that work with an HDT?
  4. I found insurance through State Farm. For a 2008 Volvo 780 it is $69 a month. Not too bad huh? Chuck
  5. What do you all think about million mile + trucks on rebuilt engines with 400-500k miles?
  6. Will do, thx Mr. Cob I found a Volvo 780 that has a foldable table with bench seats already. I was wanting that to bring the family along. I will have to see if there would be room for a smart car or something along those lines. I just need to resist the urge to leap on a nice vehicle while it's there. The right one will be there when the time is right. Chuck
  7. Thanks, and your quite welcome Rickeieio. I will certainly attend the next eastern rally. I have two conversions to complete. Wife+truck=Happy Pappy! hahahaha.
  8. Hello, I just joined the forum not long ago. Been thinking about this and then one day I found the forum read a little and joined. It has helped tremendously. I am now very close to making my purchase and then starting the conversion. I will certainly have a lot of questions then. And I will be referencing the HDT Resource Guide. I am retired from the U.S. Army and currently fly MEDEVAC helicopters. So technically I'm a driver. So why not drive and HDT for recreation? I love camping as well so I guess it all fits. My wife on the other had doesn't really get it. She just says "why?" I say "why not?" hahaha. Anyway, she loves camping too so I will win her over to the dark side. It will be our BIG ADVENTURE that we have earned after many years of many bumps & bruises, and Joy and happiness. Let the adventure begin. Chuck
  9. Hello All, Now that I know I can get insurance through State Farm (I am still going to call Lazy Days) I am looking at trucks. Volvo 670, Freightliner Cascadia, Mack Pinnacle and a Kenworth 660. All 6x4 manuals. Being new to the whole thing I would like input from you all on what your thoughts are as far as which might be a little better than the other. Thanks, Chuck
  10. Hello All, I have finally been able to find coverage and can go purchase my truck. I called a State Farm agent just down the road. Told him what I wanted to do. He called his underwriters and they said they will cover me as long as I only pull a 5th wheel camper. The way it is set up here in Virginia is that it will be registered as a Private-3 axle truck. State Farm will insure it as a Private Truck. I won't know how much $$ it will be until I get a truck secured and get them the VIN. So it looks like I will be able to make next years rally! Chuck
  11. I did not see anyway to mark it as an RV on the registration form. I’ll look again but I think it will be listed as a private 3 axle truck.
  12. One more question. if I just tell them it’s an RV and give them the VIN, won’t they see that it’s a HDT when they look it up? when I register it in Virginia it will be as a private truck, 3 axles. The paperwork has no place to check it as an RV. thanks
  13. Thank you for all the great advice. I will give Lazy Days a call. I just want to make sure I have a place lined up where I know I can get insurance before I go buy the truck. Hopefully we can get it all online before next years rally.
  14. Hello All, I am ready to pull the trigger on an HDT as part of my transition to a whole lot less work and more relaxation. Problem is is that so far I haven't found anyone who will insure an HDT for private use like my regular vehicles. Could someone please point me in the right direction? I have found a couple rigs I would like to check out but they won't last long. Thank you all, Chuck
