If  both edges are wearing that is a sign of under-inflation. If one edge is wearing that is a sign of mis-alignment or  bent axle.

Trailer tires should be inflated to sidewall maximum pressure, this is because tandem axles subject the tire sidewall to extreme stress not found on single axle applications. This is also why ST tires have heavier sidewalls than LT and P rated tires.

Cupping is on one side only.  I will add “find a repair shop” to my list today. Tires have been inflated to 120 in the year we have owned it.  I have forgotten the date on them but suspect it’s time to replace anyway.

  2. Did you get your measurements?  We have that dinette, and we will be out there, (struggling with RVS cameras) today.  I can get measurements for you.

I had not thought of that. Thank you. Table will be custom sized I suspect. I will check to see what my options are for fold down hardware and mounting.

Kevin, I've done it both ways.  The first time I had them come to me.  The service call and install was close to $300 at that time.  The second time while I was replacing my brakes and greasing my bearings I threw everything in the back of my pickup and dropped them off at a local tire shop.  I don't change my tires out much cause they wear like iron.  They time out before they ever fail.

    Ben

Thanks Ben.  The rims were swapped out recently, and this brought to my attention the cupping wear pattern near the edges.  I have some time left but thought it best to plan ahead for a change.  🙂

  4. We are full timers and so are set up most of the time with our slides out. I have decided to replace the fifth wheel tires but have not done this in a full timing situation before.
Is it standard practice to call a tire service that will bring the tires and install them on site?  Or does it make more sense to pack up and bring the trailer to a tire seller?

We are currently located SW of Corpus Christi by about 2 hours.  The very small town of Falfurrias, TX has some tire sellers that might be set up for cars and trucks but don’t appear to have room for a large truck and trailer combo in their lot.  Any recommendations for tire sales in south central Texas?

Our biggest irritation with the sleeper area is the lack of windows. We have upper bunk windows, and only the tilt out vents at the table level. That will be fixed in the future. I'm going to put in lower windows and possibly a rear window.

So...your venture into interior mods is both fun and frustrating. It will work out for your needs. Just needs some noodling....and maybe beverages of choice.

There are others here who have added lower windows to their 670, with some documentation.  FYI.

  6. Just shooting from the hip, I think the trucking industry will have some influence in this issue.  Currently there are many (thousands?) pre emission reg. trucks on the road.  I think the non compliant trucks will be moved off the road by attrition.

In addition to the things Ken mentioned, I like to sit in "my" chair and read any documents available. Not only does that tell me a lot about the RV it tells me if the chair is really comfortable or if it only felt good to sit down for a few minutes. :)

    Linda

I agree with Linda.  When sitting still, try to imagine it’s been rainy and cold for x number of days, and you are cooped up inside.  The layout and the number of windows might be a factor for you.

  8. All good advice above!  Pre-inspection, find an online forum for your unit specifically.  Spend some time there focused on common issues with used units like yours.  This will help you during the inspection.
Don’t read about the bad stuff and let it discourage you, that’s very important.  (All brands have their problems) Try to see it like a top 3 list of things to inspect.
If yours is new-factory-fresh, then you are probably good, so keep your top 3 list for the future.  (Examples might include caulk that cracks, and water fittings that tend to leak after some time goes by)

    Items to consider;
smaller 2x8 chunks of lumber to roll tires on for side to side leveling or corner jack bracing.  Wider pieces tend to split easily in my experience.

oil filled electric heater-some feel any electric heater could “go wrong”. Your discretion. Also a weight  factor.

    Small interior fan
Repurpose sleeping bags for warm bedding
Repurpose a Travel bag For cosmetics/shower/shave items

New here, was on Faceplace but so tired of all the BS so here I am!

I am in Vegas, i use my truck to haul my crawler and pull my 5th wheel.

It is just amazing how easily it pulls, the most stress free pulling I have ever done!

Tried posting some pics but the links weren't working, I'll try again later I suppose.

We're just n/e of Dallas, TX.  Going to spend a day here tomorrow doing some neglected things, like changing windsheild wipers, fixing the trailer spare tire rack, etc.  Then on to either Big Bend or the Hill Country for a couple weeks, before heading to Alpine, Tx for a week with L.D. and Judy Osborne.

We are a day south of you.  Countryside RV park in Falfurrias.  Not much to do here but golf or drive to the coast. What’s in Big Bend?

It seems 99% of the HDT’s have the hitch behind the axles which makes no sense to an old farm boy.  I was alway taught to install my hitches just in front of the rear axle.  With practically everyone placing their hitch well behind the axle, I would really like to have a better understanding of the rational as well as the pros and cons.

I’m really concerned about overall length and weight distribution.

The search function can bring up a lot of unrelated results.  I remembered the discussion has been done a few times.  I put together weight balance with no quotes, then restricted to this forum and titles only.  This link should open the same results I got.  The members in the last topic post are Well known for the expertise they have, I didn’t look at all 7 results but assume there is good info there also.  I don’t pretend to understand the discussions I found, just passing this along for the value.

Particularly note the mention of a spreadsheet, which may be still available for download.  It has a pdf extension which must be changed to xls.  Mark Bruss refers to the resource guide which is always a great source.  I didn’t follow to check it.

  12. Air conditioning system, it’s not the same level of importance as all the advice so far, but it was beyond my skill level.  I would guess $1100-$1600 range at the dealer, with no big parts replaced.

  13. Hi folks, we have a wired camera system from RVS.  Currently we have 2 cameras with room to add more.

I have removed the camera from the high mounted position on the back of the cab.  I want to mount in front of the hitch.  Many of you have done this also.  I am sure I will have to fab some kind of a frame or base.  I might be able to mount directly to the ET hitch.
I would be interested to see photos by those who have done this if you don’t mind taking the time to post them.

    Thanks in advance.

I will absolutely work on all of the small things for comfort and usability this spring. It is basically going to sit in the snow until it is warm enough for me to work on it.

Interior will get drive cam, mount for tablet (I am going to miss my nav display in my current truck), additional power as needed and any other "comfort" items.

Exterior is going to get a deck, hitch and fenders first.  I will look for options for additional storage.  Then I will look at additional water and holding tanks.

We are frequent users spending at least 90 nights/year in the RV.

We did much the same, projects large and small were as weather permitted.
I think the dealer I bought from was prepared to fix anything I found wrong.  I missed several things that they might have fixed (But I will never know) such as a cab mount that was broken and a power steering hose that was leaking.  If yours is a fleet truck, why not ask them?

  15. I was where you are, just a few years ago.  Excellent question AND you are asking the right people here.  I second the oil and dyno.  I would not have thought of the passenger air ride seat.
Expanding on that, ANYTHING that can make the passenger seat better!  We have yet to find a good answer for the so called cup holder in the center.  More power outlets for the passenger.  Make sure the door controls work.  The window switches have a tendency to go bad.  Same with the dash HVAC controls. Small stuff but frustrating if they are broken and you didn’t notice.

So, Kevin.....  Last time we saw you, you had your arm in a sling and were waiting to see if you'd have surgery in Hutch, or have to go home.  Did all turn out okay, and are you on the mend?

    Just wondering........

Just a small FYI, they took the pins out of my wrist yesterday.  I will presumably be able endorsing checks again very soon.  😉
I am moved by the concern and helpful friends here.  Thank you so much!

I was able to visit another RV repair in Lebanon, TN.  We got a nice little tour and detailed description of how our slide floor would be repaired.  We have not scheduled yet, but will probably go with this place.

Lebanon RV Repair in Lebanon, TN.  Anyone have any recommendations for, or against?  Thanks in advance.
