If the banks are closed you are in it very deeply. Better to have a good safe in your stick & bricks. Use a safe deposit for documents, securities, etc., which will have no value if things really go south. You could keep cash, jewelry, and precious metals there, in addition to having your portable emergency supply.

Good idea. With the way the world is right now, plus inflation, the value of the dollar is not likely to improve. I also have a stash of gold and silver as my ultimate rainy day fund.
