  1. Getting the tail lights  recessed and installed. Also welded in the steps, installing clear penny lights in the top of each step to aluminate steps at night when the rear work lights are on. Also installing fuel filler necks make fill ups easier.

When I had mine built the fabricator talked me into using Tremclad (similar to Rustoleum) on the deck.  His reasoning was it made it simpler if I wanted add any welded brackets or move chocks etc.  Also a gallon of paint is cheap if you want to refresh the deck every couple of years.  So far it has been a good move.

Thanks Nigel I will keep that in mind!

I see you've marked what appear to be steps on the side behind the tires.  Will there be some sort of hand rail too?  Nice touch.

yes, planning on steps and a removable post to hang onto when climbing up and down. Thanks

    Aluminum:

    1. Doesn't rust every time it gets a little chip or used in winter....

    2. Saves tare weight so you can ballast the unit correctly with motorcycles, ATV's, side by each's, 4x4's, beer, water, 100's of tools, and other important stuff

All the above, not to mention no need to powder coat everything including the inside if the boxes, they can just stay uncoated. No more expensive in my area  than steel either and much lighter to work with.

    Hi Blaine -

That body is looking great.  Are you planning to isolate the body from truck frame flex like is done with aluminum tanker bodies?

They use an L bracket with some springs and long bolts. The sills of the body are isolated from the frame rails by strips of rubber or hardwood.  A visit to your local tanker carrier or truck stop with your image phone in hand ...

By the looks of your workmanship you probably know about 100% of this already :)

You got it, the main bed frame rails are setting on 3/8 rubber that is glued down to the truck frame rails to eliminate electrolysis.

Nice!  What kind of finish are you planning on? Paint? Polished? Bed Liner?

bed liner on the top, and probably an automotive base coat clear coat on the sides to match the truck. i will leave the inside of the boxes plain aluminum.

Blaine   Really nic looking truck and a great shop. The horizontal drill motor with the long reach is used to drill holes thru the frame to the other side? Or what. Just wondering what its used for. Keep up the good work. And keep the pictures coming.   Pat

    Hi Blaine,

I have 2012 Volvo VNL 630. It's white in color. I choose to keep the truck tandem. I know of a fellow up your way that I use to work with that has a metal working shop not to far from Congress Lake. It's been a few years since I have seen him. I think his shop could be still open. He does great work. Maybe some day we could meet up. Please keep us updated on your truck.

    Al

Thats cool, email me some pics of your rig when you get a second. Would love to see it. blainemiller1@gmail.com

    Hi Blaine,

Nice to see someone else from northeast Ohio. I'm in Canton myself. Nice looking shop. Maybe some day we might meet up.

Good luck with your truck,     Welcome to the forum. 😁
    Al

Thanks Al, do you have an HDT hauler yourself. Maybe after we get this truck done we can meet up somewhere.

Yeah, after I posted, I though to look at your profile.  It plainly said where you are hiding.  We're just west of Cincy, so if your passing through......

    definitely, try to remember that

Looks like you have a nice project, and a VERY nice shop in which to work.

So, where're ya located? Have you been to any rallies?

Thanks, No rally's yet I am a newbie, I am in Hartville Ohio in between Akron and Canton

  12. going to single it at 230" put a hauler bed on it for smart car, generator and water tank, ET hitch in the rear and side skirts with boxes, rear facing led back lights, and a hitch camera. Putting BluDot braking system on DRV camper for better proportioned braking, (thanks to Henry Szmyt for the suggestion)
