Correct! However that is the accepted definitions for towing nationwide. The silly notion towing 2 trailers is triple-towing flies in the face of logic; I wonder how the bloggers define single-towing? How about towing 3 trailers?

Some RV blogger made that up and it stuck due IMO to trucker-wannabe's towing RV trailers. You never hear that outside the RV towing sector.

Gotcha, I misunderstood your purpose with the chart

Price of wood lately, cheaper to build with steel. Just sayin'.

As much as I want to say "who gives a damn", Darryl is right

You can still put toys behind the 5th wheel just not on a 'trailer'.

Google 'freedomhauler' - it looks and hauls like a trailer but is considered an extension of the 5th wheel.

The key is that it doesn't pivot on a single point (hitch) and is instead attached at two points with no pivot.

It can also be converted back to a trailer for regular use once at your destination.

Not in my state. The freedom hauler is still an "attachment" and not part of the original trailer. I have never seen the definition of a trailer anywhere that say it has only one attachment point as opposed to two or how it is attached for that matter. Just like a "flip axle" on the back of a commercial semi trailer. It is a separate unit. If it's not permanently attached, its a trailer, IMHO and 34 years of LE experience.
Even on their website they tell you on some trailers you may need a hitch (and they recommend the Hensley) to attach it to your trailer in some instances.
And if Oregon is as strict as others say here, I wonder what the overall vehicle length for an RV is??

Give us a little more notice next time.  Especially if you happen to get close to Cincinnati.

What part of Iowa, Phil? If close to Ottumwa, Iowa you have to stop at the Canteen in the Alley. If near Marshalltown it's an Original Maidrite.  Both places serve "Loose meat" sandwiches. Then on to the Pork Tenderloins. The best place is long gone, but almost any place that has them on the menue will be  good. Stay away from the "Port Fritter" at first. It's a less expensive alternative. I'm assuming you are still "Motel'ling" it. One of the hardest summer places to find a spot for a big rig was Iowa. Go figure.

    Enjoy,

    Rod

Rick, I'll do that if I get up this way again. I'm doing some driver training and then moving on to the next job.

Rod, I don't have to worry about parking. The girls and I are in the company truck, doing the animal friendly hotel thing. Thanks for the restaurant recommendations.

You're just up the road from Paul and Paula Gillenwater.  They're about 2 miles from the southern Sherhardsville exit.  And you're under two hours from us.

Too bad I'm only here for 2 days...then on to Iowa. I'd love to catch up with some good friends.

Another new job, or the new job that is a year old now?

The year and a half old job. Sitting in a hotel in Louisville, Ky right now.

    Hey totally talking about kayaks……🙄🙄
p.s.  hope you’re doing well Phil.

Carl, we're doing great thanks. The new job is just keeping me busy... but I'm having fun. Hope yall are well too

  8. well, since the conversation WAS about boats and not sex partners, I'll let you perverts have some fun. I should have known not to trust you guys to stay out of the gutter  LOL

  9. I've spent my entire life paddling "real" kayaks. I've never seen an inflatable that could maneuver like a a solid boat or even a skin on frame. The thought of leaving my 17ft carbon fiber boat behind has distressed me for many years. I'm leaning toward a pakayak. I just can't bring myself to buy an inflatable.

  10. I just got a "friend of a friend deal" quote to paint my whole truck and bed......$15k. It needs doing so it will happen, I just need to find the vaseline first.

  11. Mark, I have a 17ft kayak and have been studying this question since I bought my truck in 2010. As much as I hate to say it...It ain't happening with tall truck and a long boat.

Yes, but mine a 453. Wider tract also. Mine haldles great or did until those tires were put on. Also have found larger tires hurt performance.

Performance? This IS a smart car we are talking about. It's not exactly what I would call a performance built car to begin with.

I don't think we have the wheel clearance on the newer Smarts. Know my previous 451 had lots of clearance.

So go reasoned of the smart car forums and find out. Trust me, someone at one of them has the answer.

"And that is why I changed my rims."

Sounds good to me.  That's what I expect to do, later this year.  What are the downsides , if any, you've experienced?

    None. It rides better, too.

My rear tires always go first. Lots of thread on fronts.

And that is why I changed my rims. I have the same size tires and wheels all the way around so I can rotate my tires. I put 195/50/15's and 6" wide wheels on all 4 corners.

  16. I have considered using that same panel on my truck, but was planning on just flat mounting it on top of my drum box. I "assumed" it would work well enough since it was mainly just there to maintain the batteries. Am I wrong?

The final build. Now to re-do the bed liner on the deck and cover the new box to match.

  17. I have always been happy with my Pressure Pro. After 16 years I finally upgraded to the new version. It makes changing trailers simple. It will let you create numerous trailers (just install sensors on each one) and simply select which trailer you want to tow. Would be great for someone with 1 tow vehicle and numerous trailers. If I remember correctly it can handle 144 sensors.

I, and my Volvo are in Connecticut, and my back yard has trees on all sides but does get some full sun.

Dan, do you have a shore power plug? If you are in the back yard why not simply install a battery minder and just keep the truck plugged in?
This is what I have. It's the "old" model and a lot cheaper than its "new" counterpart.

Some things I read said that you HDT folks were supposed to be more DIY inclined but I'm starting to wonder!  For under $20 you could buy the exact same relays Jackalopee uses and it wouldn't be hard to wire them up.

You keep pushing your D-I-Y method which is fine, if it works for you. To some of us D-I-Y means installing, not building. I didn't build my inverter, but I did install it and wire it.  I didn't build my brake controller but I installed it also. I didn't twist strands of copper together and coat it in plastic for either install. Some here have actually built their own beds, most have them built. And not a single D-I-Y'er built their own truck. We ALL bought one. D-I-Y can mean different things to different people.

You've made it clear, in more than one thread (and about half of your posts here) that for $20 you think you can beat the Jackalopee, and I'm happy for you. But I'll stick with a tried and true version that I know works when needed.

And a trouble free circuit board ( unless you let it get full of water)  and spare terminals and led's so you can trouble shoot easily and easy installation and.......

We have one on our first truck.  We also have one sitting on the workbench to be installed on the next truck.

Hey, my Jackalopee worked, even full of water if you remember. I had one led floating in the water after it rusted loose but the thing still worked.
