Don't you want constant power?     Fuse the power source in the overhead.     Many cams record while parked if they sense motion.

I’ve always set my cams to shut down when not moving

  2. I have a 2012 Volvo 780. I want to put my dash cam near the top of the windshield but the only power in the overhead console (CB and Acc, plug) is direct to the battery. Has anyone removed the left or right side trim from the forward pillars? I tried but felt like I was going to break something. If. Can remove it I can feed power down through there.

As a "for instance", there was snow on the road sides this week, on Hwy 40. Different stretch of road, further east, but similar elevation. It didn't last, but there'll be more.

I’m expecting some. It’s a storm that I’ll be watching out for. Staying 2 nights in Calgary before heading over. Owner said if weather looks bad I can stay longer.

I would travel Hwy 3 at that time year if you aren't in a Big Hurry.  Right from MB to Hope BC

I took a quick look at that route. Now you’ve mentioned it I’ll look a little closer. Thanks.

There is a lot of great hiking areas still open at that time of the year, but the weather is going to be a gamble. We do a crossing of Montana and Idaho around the same time, and seriously watch the weather. The elevation makes a difference.

For sure. If we have to sit for a day in Alberta and wait for weather I will.

Sorry, I didn't consider camping during your travels, due to weather conditions. Of the four campgrounds around Tunnel Mountain, three close Oct. 3 for the winter, so make sure to make reservations at the right one. You'd probably need to winterize your RV, too, just in case. It's beautiful country, just not a place I'd willingly bring my house to at that time of year. Transiting, yes. Staying, no.

I was figuring on cold weather through there. Thanks for the heads up. Maybe I’ll leave the sightseeing for the way back.

Tunnel Mountain Campground just outside of Banff is spectacular and they have hundreds of sites that will accommodate you.  I don’t care for the town of Banff it caters to rich tourists.  I much prefer Jasper it feels like real people live there.  Take your time coming back there are many must see places along the way.

Thanks Nigel. Yes, going to take a month or so in the spring. I’ll check out Tunnel Mountain CG

Watch every episode of "Highway Through Hell" that you can get your hands on. Take notes on what NOT to do. Keep an eye on your cell phone for the weather report, even though cell service is spotty through the mountains. We use Wunderground.com and windy.com, along with the local 511 website.

If you stop inside either of the national parks, you'll need to purchase a Parcs Canada pass, but not required if only passing through. Hotels are cheaper outside the parks' limits, too. Food is likewise. Most of the touristy things to do will be shut down, but skiing will be picking up.

    What are your interests?

Thanks. Lots of interests but on this trip through just looking to stop for 1 night. I’ve driven truck for years so trip planning is second nature. In all my years though I’ve never run the Rockies. My region was the Appalachians, Poconos, just the little east coast stuff.

  9. We’re heading to BC from Ontario for the winter in late October. Going to take our time but not too much time for weather reasons. Has anyone on here traversed the Rockies? I’d like to overnight at least once while going through them and am looking for suggestions. Our final destination is Langley. TIA.

  10. I wanted to order a set of the Smart car big boy II ramps and they say they’re out of stock until the end of August. 12” wide ones are out of stock too. Waiting to hear on expected delivery for them.

  12. I spent the last few months working on my bed build outside in the lovely Canadian weather. Still a few things to do (marker lights, storage cabinet...) Picked up our Raptor 421 yesterday. Hauled like a champ.

OK, anyone running the TrailerSaver 3rd airbag willing to get me some dimensions of the airbag mounting bracket?

I beleive I have sourced the proper airbag and fittings.  Just have to figure out the mounting bracket.  Thanks!

I know it’s an old post but did you ever get the measurements for the bracket? I saw the post where you had made one. If you have them could you pass them along?

Spent some time with a fabricator today. Tossed around some great ideas. I hope to document the process for all here.

    Here's where we stand:

    - extension on the frame will be 25'ish inches. (the wheelbase is 210). We're allowing for a 57" wide trike and the 60" radius for the trailer. The trike will be loaded via a loader instead of ramps.

    - we ARE leaving the rear axles as they are. Tandem tires and both axles.

All the input and thoughts have been really helpful. Big thanks all.

    Construction basics (so far):

    - Capping the frame rails with hard wood. Wonder if Trex decking would work?

    - Using 2"x3" channel on top of that. Tied to the frame with angle iron bolting it down. Kept the commercial hitch mount rails to tie too. Will add front and read connection points as well.

    - 2"x2" square tube cross members.

    - I hope to make the the center frame deck panels removable .

       That's where we stand.

    Bob

What gauge 2x2 are you using?

  15. The 7 wire I picked up was 3 #10’s (wt, bk and bl) plenty for the current being carried so the crimps were tight but fit fine. The other 4 were #12’s. I used all four for the controller. +12 switched, Blue to brake controller terminal, the red I crimped together with the red wire from the truck. The ground I went to the aux ground at the top left.

  16. It was but my truck had 2. The traditional one behind the cab and one that ran to the rear. I pulled the rear all the way back to where I could cut it so it was just long enough to reach in to the side storage box.
