How are you double towing?  Your current set-up is not.  A UTV in a toy hauler is not.  How are you planning on double towing?  Most get away with being over-length, but, if you are one that gets checked/ticketed, be prepared to pay the fine.  Also, not all states allow double towing.  Another ticket and be prepared in those states to drop the double and getting it moved some-how.  Just my 2-cents worth.

No our current setup is not double towing...since we purchased the SxS we have a small utility trailer behind the 5th wheel.  That's my concern and why we're looking at toy haulers.  All the states listed will allow double tow but we're a little concerned with our total length and what we may find regarding law enforcement agents.

  2. Looking for real world experiences....we travel with a HDT and 5th wheel with a Smart piggy backed on the truck. We recently purchased a side-by-side and are looking to upgrade to a toy hauler. Planning to visit Elkhart to see a few floor plans but need to get there by traveling through TX, OK, KS, MO and IL. Then we'd like to transition up through the UP of Michigan, Minneapolis and SD on our way to the rally in Boise - all this while double towing and total length just over 80'. Any advice?

We now are using YouTube TV for all of our OTR and cable channel viewing.  It comes with an "infinite capacity" cloud DVR so we never have to worry about whether or not it's convenient to watch shows when they are scheduled. Yes, it does require data, but there are a number of truly unlimited plans now available from several sources.

Are you traveling with the YT TV?  I was told a year ago that it was not possible to get OTA channels in an RV with YT TV.  If possible, are you getting a single location OTA or changing as you travel?

I wasn't trying to be funny.  So, my friend has to have the app on his phone also?  So, everyone has to have the same app?  I mean, everyone uses the same currency for a couple of hundred years now, and that's why cash works.  How does my buddy take the bar code to the car wash and get coins or tokens from the change machine?

My only point was, it ain't "just like cash".  I've never run into anyone who wouldn't take cash.  I don't have any friends who use the CASH app.

I certainly understand using these apps for business.  I use very little cash, mostly just for buying a cup of coffee or paying between friends, like my example.  Until everyone is on the same page and using a standardized app, I think I'll continue to carry a little cash.

The app is a convenience for us.  We don't carry any real "cash" anymore, so when your buddy says you owe me $12.50 I say "okay I just sent it to you" and he gets $12.50 deposited into his bank account.  Same with babysitters and splitting the dinner check with a friend.  There's no scanning, but your buddy does need to be registered with the app so you can send him money to his bank.  It's just like using a debit card between people....

I've been renewing my SD registrations online for years and it sure doesn't cost me an extra $25 to do so.  The renewals are mailed to my PMB which is also the address on my license.  Haven't had a problem yet and you don't have to deal with the county office where you are registered: SD Cars website

We have a SD PMB, but not with Escapees and I just renewed our 3 vehicles online at the above web site.  They offered a payment through electronic funds for an additional $1.50, which we used.

Really nice video Jim.  Thanks for putting that together.  Of course now you need to come every year as I have just appointed you our official videographer of the WCR!  ;)

Hahaha.....you and Jennifer do such a fine job we wouldn't miss it.  Thanks for the promotion (I think) 🤣

Thanks Jim & Kellie! It was really nice seeing you at the rally again......maybe catch up with you on the gulf coast one day.  :)

Thanks Rick.  It was really great to see you and Carey again.  Let us know when you head south so we can cross paths 😎

Jim it kinda surprised me when we caught up to you Donna got hung up at the Flying J, she said it was a real zoo, I must have sat waiting for her for close to a half hour after you had stopped.  One of these days that big yeller kitty under the Hood is going to get me in trouble.

We're never in a hurry....cruise set at 65 and down the road we go, so you must have been picking them up and putting them down pretty good!  We did see you at the next rest area though so sometimes the turtle does get there first!!  Thanks all for the great time at the rally.

I look at their website every so often, but so far, they don't have any hosts in areas where we travel.  I think it's a great idea, though, if they're located along your route.  While I haven't read all the details, I didn't realize you're supposed to give the hosts a gratuity.

It's not really a gratuity....HH just asks that you make a small purchase from the hosts to show your appreciation.

  9. With plenty of solar and battery we are considering joining Harvest Host as an alternative to boondocking at Walmarts and Cabelas.  Does anyone have experience with this group?  Our travel style is to leave by 9:00am for our next destination and I'm not sure we could give the host the necessary gratuity in a short 18 to 20 hour stay.

Well the arm is getting better, but the PT is putting quite a hurt on it, it's got to stretch but it doesn't have to do it in one treatment!
We are trying to make plans, but the work schedule, and Karen's mother with dementia is keeping things in the air at this time, I can run away from work, but Mom and Dad needs all the help we can give, as with most families it seams one or two out of the bunch does it all.

    Roger

Completely agree.....hope all works out, would be great to get together.

I'm hoping Karen and I can make it to the rally, things are really up in the air at this time with my shoulder surgery on Monday. We were hoping on going to Alaska this summer starting at the WCR, and then heading up, might make it to the WCR and head home, but your welcome to give mine a look over any time, it's different in the way it's set up, solar panels on the trailer and everything else on the truck, but it works well for me this way.

    Roger

Roger....how are you feeling?  Would be great to get together this year at the WCR.  Besides, I really want to see your drom 🙂

With all due respect, I don't think that any currently available AT&T "unlimited" hotspot plan provides for more than 15GB of LTE data before slowing the device down to 128kps.  I presume you are aware of that.

If you want a truly unlimited hotspot option you may wish to consider the new Verizon prepaid hotspot plan for $70/mo with a $5/mo credit for automatic payment.

X2 on this.  We just started our new prepaid and love it.  Just be sure to get a good jetpack.  We started with the cheap Ellipsis and couldn't get more than 1.6 Mps download.  I went back to the store and purchased the 8800 and now have 30+ Mps download and stream without any issues.
