  1. Hello,

couple years ago you guys respond to message about Gas Line inspectors job with Southern Cross out of Atlanta..  Was wondering if you did, or still doing this job?  I see from some of your post it appears you may be with all the moving around.

I was still interested in but had question on how often you move, how far in advance you know where you will be moving etc.  let me know if you are able to answer questions about this..  thanks   Carl

  2. when i inquired on southern cross's facebook page about the travelers line inspections jobs they responded it was still ongoing.  i had a link at one point but not able to find it.

the amounts had gone up in all categories.

here is the info i got back in 2019

Hi Carl, I just wanted to circle back to you on the Mobile Gas Leak (Travelers) position. Kevin does not work for the company any longer but I partnered with him in working with our traveler staff. You are welcome to email me at nmoore@southerncrossinc.com if you'd like any additional information. Thanks!

I was invited to the February class, but had to decline as I could not get there within the 2 week notice.  I have since gotten ready, hoping to be invited to the next class.  Is there one set up yet, or do they plan on having another anytime soon?

WOW 2 weeks notice is rather quick for sure.. Please be sure to keep us informed as to how this plays out.. good luck!!!

  4. hey todd,'

I was emailing with Kevin for a while before he got the "new position" when he posted on airfourms.com workkamper the opportunity he was doing and was letting the community know about. At the time they, Southern Cross, was looking for folks to join the "traveler" program like what he was doing at the time..

Our current plan is to go full time in some 3ish yrs, one kid in college to graduate in 3 yrs. I try to stay in contact with Kevin to say hello and see how he and rest of crew is doing now in atlanta.. He mentioned a lot of traveling, not in airstream, for work and the new stuff they are getting into with elec meters and such.. Sounds like a lot to do going forward.

So do you have any news on project and such with the company.. also has the pay, weekly per Diem, and travel rates changed?

what are current rates for this ?

    thanks

    carl

Yes. It is Southern Cross. No. I'm not PepeTheDog, but that guy is still with the company - and he's our boss. As it turns out, Southern Cross is experiencing tremendous growth and needs 90+ people for a new project. If interested, let us know.

    Todd

  5. refer to post #371 above.. contact kevin via email for more info on who and how many travelers they are going to hire for spring. He is the travelers manager for Southern Cross..

I would like more information on this please. My wife and I are looking at traveling full time next year (2018) and are currently looking for income. We will be new to this life style but looking forward to the opportunities it offers. If you can forward me any information you think I would need and also the qualifications that are required it would be extremely helpful. Please let me know how I can send you my email to receive the info (not sure if there is a PM option on the threads).

    Thank you

    Brian Bernard

  6. SO is this with Southern Cross in Ga..there is a guy that post here at times pepthedog who was a traveler doing gas line inspections around the country. He did a post on his blogg http://airstreamtalesandtrails.blogspot.com/2013/07/walkin-line.html

    telling this story.

    thanks

For the last 18 months, we have 'Work Camped' - but not in the traditional sense of receiving a "free" campsite as all / part of our compensation. Instead, we travel the country inspecting Natural Gas Pipelines as contractors - assisting Natural gas Companies with meeting their Federal / State mandated inspection deadlines. As a result of our employee arrangement, we receive a per diem (to cover campground costs), Mileage Pay One (for our motor-home as we travel the country), Mileage Pay Two (for use of our vehicle during daily travel within our destination area) and Internet Pay (to ensure a reliable connection via mobile networks) - in addition to an hourly wage. Since we function as full-time employees, our position includes Health Insurance and 401K (However, we choose not to contribute to the 401K). Over the last 14 months, we have ONLY spent that which we have earned - allowing our 'retirement income' to remain untouched (as it grows). We have visited 25 states in this time - often staying at Moose Lodges or Elks Lodges (with full hookups), rather than campgrounds or RV Parks, in an effort to reduce costs. We work 40 hours each week delineated any way we choose (five "eights", four "tens" or 40 hours in three days - the choice is ours). While, our arrangement might not suite everyone, for us, it provides a more than livable wage supporting a very active lifestyle.

Many similar opportunities to ours exist. One simply needs to think 'outside the box' when searching for these things.

  7. Southern Cross is expanding into more utility areas beyond the gas survey and meter replacement. Water meters are also being replaced, gas meter index's are being swapped for ERT style, all the street lighting that is halogen or mercury vapor are being changed to LED etc.

Plus every month there are miles of new gas piping being laid. All the new natural gas wells have piping that has to be inspected quarterly. Many systems are moving to a 3-year survey instead of 5-year. There is no lack of work.

that is great to hear.. I know in my area we still have old dial type gas meters, our elec meters were switched out to digital transmitter type several years ago, and our street light changed out last year from MV to LED.. it amazing. The town we live in estimated we are saving over 80K a year in utility cost and we are a small town (Garner NC, home of American Idol Winner, Scotty McCreery), outside of raleigh nc.

looking forward to hitting the road and hoping i can get the wife to see how great an opportunity this could be.

kevin is not writing so much now, he tried to shuck that off to the cat, but it not working. I enjoyed reading his adventures on the gas line job but now as a big wig I guess there is less time.

I wanted to ask kevin about the guy he was working with in utah, i think, that quit and when to FedEx and they happen to see each other in a totally different place.. any contact with him and how he is doing now..?? and man what a story of how small the world really is..

  8. Been keeping up with this thread and very interested in the electrical side of the job...I have ten years experience in reading, changing out electric meters and would love to do that again as a "traveler"!! Is that an option now or is it just the gas line service that is available? Thanks again for all your up-dates and information for everybody! Have a blessed day!

    dude,,

if i had 1 month, 2 weeks, 6 days till retirement I would stay home, not drive, not do anything that might change that till after retirement has started.. :)

congrats to you sir for a job well done..

This meter change out deal sound right up your alley. But I have to wonder how long something like that can last.. there are only so many meters, our got changed out several years ago in the garner nc area, and once changed out they don't really need any more service other than someone driving around in a van taking the readings for billing.

at least with gas lines they will, not if but when, develop leaks that need to be found.

wish i was in your shoes and could convince the wife this was a cool thing to do, but for her doing nothing is COOL..

  9. this is an interesting new development. Is this an additional type of job at SC in which you will be doing gas line inspections along with changing out meters with what a new digital transmitter type? or will they be separate jobs.

Just got home last week with "new" 2005 classic 30 ft airstream hoping to hit the road in 4 years more or less. With this new job set how long do you they seeing this going into the future??

congrats on your promotion. Does this make you the new travel projects manager for east or all US?

thanks for the updates and take care.

  10. I am coming aboard soon, and I cannot wait to see new places and looking forward to the new challenges. All that is left for me is a new mattress for the RV and a tow kit for the jeep (still shopping around).

So have you gotten through training and in the field?.. first impressions on the whole deal thus far.. good bad etc have a good one
