Tread carefully! Most states have TIME LIMITS as to how long you can use another states's license & registration before you must get the local license & reg. With RVer's, I'm NOT aware of this being being strictly enforced in most states BUT, circumstances could bite you in the butt. A neighbor could report you; if you're involved in an accident / incident; if your insurance company notices the discrepancy of where you claim to live vs where you actually live etc. Attorney Steve Lehto does a video about what he calls the Montana Registration Scam. I think that some of the points Steve raises could apply to your situation. Be VERY careful NOT to lie or misrepresent material facts in all of the paperwork you need to file in making this change. Falsifying Official Documents can be a FELONY. You really want to have all your "I"s doted and "t"s crossed. It can be a confusing process. Good luck!

Thank you for the information. I did google his video and he has some interesting points. In my case, AR requires the taxes to be paid based on the point of delivery, so I would in fact pay AR taxes on it since I'd most likely buy it here. The only real concern I had was, as you pointed out, the amount of time that I (and the vehicles) would still be lingering around (~9 months I'm estimating). I have not been successful in finding any information on what that time limit might be, or if it even exists, in AR. There is also a personal property tax in AR to consider, which could make the situation sketchy as well if I hang around too long.

Looks to be a very grey area for me at the moment. I don't want to wait until the last minute to purchase the truck/rv because I need to be using it when I move out of my house and it will take considerable time to make that happen. The old chicken/egg thing...

  2. Hi all,

As I plan my epic escape from from the bonds of the corporate world to go full time next year, I've started the process of shopping for an HDT. Based on my research, I've selected SD as my future domicile. Since my current state of AR requires a CDL, I'm wondering if there's any major concerns with moving forward now to change my domicile and drivers license to SD so that I can actually drive the HDT until we've completed the process of downsizing and selling our home in AR?

I am currently still employed in AR and intend to pay taxes here until then. I would also go ahead and register my personal daily driver in SD as well, so as to avoid any appearance of impropriety if I were to be pulled over while driving it around in AR.

Any major roadblocks to this plan that I might need to consider?
