We off road and boondock frequently and I'm scared of getting this thing stuck if we get off the highway, hence the locking diffs.  We will be parking in dirt, gravel, and grass lots/fields and I have enough experience to know they sink and don't do well on wet grass.  I've also considered super singles (off road tread) and wide tires in front to keep it from sinking as bad as well as building a 3-4k lb bed for added traction when bob tailing.

If you really want the truck to be off-road capable you could also look at a hydraulic AWD assist like the EZ Trac system. I have seen a couple service trucks with it and seemed to work quite well. I have no idea the cost or if they have a setup that works with your selected truck. The cost may out weigh the benefit.

I would be happy with a late 80's Kenworth W900B

Very nice NotEven. I am with you on the W900B. The flat tops are drop dead gorgeous. The shorter nose also lends itself to better proportions in the rv towing platform. In my opinion, once the W900's gets under a 250 inch wheel base, the W900L looks a little nose heavy. I do like the W900A in the video but think the B model is just that much better. I am still searching for my perfect W900B (or W900L).

  3. The W900A models are the conventionals built from around 1967 to 1982.

The current model of W900's are W900B that designates the standard hood length, W900L designates a long hood length and W900S designates a sloping hood.

    Gotta love the W900 trucks!

Call Lazy Days RV in Tampa FL.  They know their stuff.  We got better coverage for lower price than any of the others mentioned.  I can bobtail and pull any non-commercial trailer all I want.

Thanks for the information from both of you. I will give the companies you suggested a call this week. We won't be bobtailing a lot, but definitely need the ability to do so. It won't work for us if we can't. Definitely a lot of hurdles to jump through. Lucky for us, it appears there are a lot of good coaches around here to teach me how to hurdle! Greatly appreciated.

    Howdy All,

I have gotten my truck-trailer insurance through Miller in Oregon.  Better coverage then I had for LESS money then I was paying to national general BEFORE they decided to rape me.  The new policies are through Progressive, if your in the market to get or renew the insurance for your HDT I would suggest giving these folks a call.

    Hi Dave,

I am also located in Washington State and am trying to research insurance for my future HDT. Does your insurance through Miller allow you to bobtail? I am not going to be full timing and am trying to figure out if I can insure the truck under a motor home policy or if I will need a commercial policy. Thanks for any information you can provide.

Look at this logically. Most of your route will be (should be) on interstate highways, surrounded by traffic. Follow the speed limits, don't stick out, don't drive like you've never been in traffic before. The Highway Patrol has enough to look after without chasing you down.

The alternative is to get all the paperwork done before you leave Utah, to run on Utah tags.

Probably not an issue driving down the highway. It is when you go into or pass the scale house and your truck looks like an over the road truck bobtailing. If the truck is still registered commercial but out of service, it could become an interesting conversation. :)

  7. I am going through the same process as you. I will be purchasing a truck most likely across the country and be bobtailing it back to the pacific northwest. Have you already completed the purchase and are picking up the truck in a few weeks? If so, then you probably will have plenty of time to get registration and plates showing it is registered as a motor home (assuming truck has enough equipment installed to qualify). If the temp tags are showing the truck as commercial, then I would be nervous as well. My plan is to have registration in hand showing it registered as a motor home prior to bobtailing back. I look forward to hearing how your adventure goes. If you purchased your truck from Jordans Truck Sales I would be interested in hearing how your experience goes.

  8. Graham is a short drive. I may have to stop in to talk with them to see if they can overnight license plates and registration anywhere in the country. I was also going to stop in to my local agency as well to see if they are familiar with the process.  I will most likely be purchasing the truck out of state due to limited local availability. Thanks so much for all your help. I look forward to seeing how your project comes along.

  9. Nice K100. Congratulations on getting it registered as a motor home. We are currently in search of a W900B with a 72 inch sleeper to convert to a motor home in Washington State and am very interested in how the registration is accomplished. Did you have to take it in to the Washington State Patrol to be inspected? Do you have to go to a specific office for the paperwork or do you just go to your local licensing agency? Do you know if they accept a microwave as a cooking device? I am also curious if you need both a cooking device and a portable toilet or if you can have just one of the two as the Department of Licencing states on their website. Sorry for so many questions. I am just trying to get my ducks in a row when the perfect truck pops up.
