I really am having a hard time deciding on engine and power train. Part of me wants to keep the old 216, and part of me wants to upgrade to something fuel injected.

I learned to drive in my dad's 1952 Chevy.  My oldest brother was a mechanic at the local Chevy garage in those days, and swapped out the 216 for a slightly later 235. As I recall, the main difference was a pressure oil system vs the 216 splash dipper system. It would pin the oil pressure gauge to the top.

Very sorry to hear this news.  GLWS.

    Thanks!

It was a dream, but things never quite seemed to pan out. I had hoped to cruise the lower 48 at a leisurely pace and touch base with family and friends that I never seem to get to see. Now, unless I were to win a Powerball to finance such a combo, the years ahead of me are far fewer than those behind me. I still follow this forum every day, plus the Facebook groups. A number of the

I got a set of rear OE takeoff rims for the front so I could have the same size on all 4. When the original tires wore out I put the size the tire shop said fit a Toyota Yaris. I'd have to go look to be sure, but I want to say they're 185/70 size. They JUST fit. Any bigger and they would rub in the wheel well in a tight turn.

On edit, I bet they could turn you on to a cruise control. I had mine done at a Car Toys that was literally next door to smart in Seattle, so it had cruise control from day one.

At JGW RV park outside of Redding, CA visiting my wife’s family for the holidays.  We have a really nice site along the Sacramento River with a tall hedge separating our site from all the others.  Very private and plenty of room for the HDT, 5er and Jeep.

Thanks for the tour of your truck and trailer! It really enjoyed meeting you and your bride and to get to actually set eyes on a really nice setup! Don't know if/when things will ever come together to get my own rig, but I can still dream!

    X2.

motorcyclists and truckers (I've been both) develop the exact same habits, and yes, it has saved more than one accident in the daily driver as well.  assume the general driving public is stupid, and will pull the stupidest stunt you can imagine, and you will be right and avoid many accidents.

    X3

I started driving motorcycles on the street in 1967, and in the 42 years I rode I've been in 46 of the lower 48 on 2 wheels. I also drove city buses in some of the heaviest traffic in the country (Seattle area) for 30 years. Driving as if you are invisible and expect the other driver to run you down is a good survival tactic. You learn to read what the other motorist is going to do, and make a practice of not being there when they make their move is something I'd call "aggressive defensive driving". You take charge of the situation.

I was just looking at one of those today and I have seen those in some past used trucks that have sold on here. Do people sell them used much or just keep them in the truck? I have some higher prority items on my list I need to get taken care of first, but one of those would definitely help her for sure. Heck, I know it would help me although I'm starting to learn some tricks like at 35mph if you add the 3 & 5 you get 8th for 8th gear. 9th at 45, 10th at 55. But that would give you a really quick visual of what gear you can go to.

I did a Google search to see if I could come across one used, but no joy (for now). I have seen one pop up here on this board now and then, but they seem to move really fast, so if you see one, jump on it.

I think that quick-and-dirty math solution is pretty smart, though...maybe the better and cheaper way anyhow.? One less electronic device to have to mess with...

Oh yeah it definitely was. I was doing all the research on the HDT's and it took me a bit to convince my wife that this was the way to go. She understood that with the year trucks we were shopping and the size of our toy hauler, a 3500 was not going to work, but she kept pushing maybe a 4500/5500 type truck instead or even a MDT. However, when I started showing her prices of some of those trucks though and how much more truck we could get for the prices we were looking, plus the convenience of having the bed in the back, that really helped. I think now that she has ridden in it and seen it in action, she knows we made the right choice too. Plus she knows I'll be a whole lot happier towing with this setup! :)

This is one of those "couldn't rip the grin off your faces if you used both hands" deals!

Something that just now occurred to me...maybe you can score a Gear Master to help her get the hang of the gears when she gets her nerve up to drive...
