We travel by ourselves in Mexico for 5-6 months each year. We prefer the colonial areas and many times are in small pueblos where we are the only ones speaking English. We have never had a problem nor do we personally know anyone who has suffered anything worse than a robbery. No one was ever injured and this can happen anywhere!
