  1. I would try to clean the aluminum up but not patch it - it is functioning as a big heat sink and patching with a different material will probably not improve matters. Having a clean surface and good thermal transfer is important. I would probably use thermal mastic not the anti-oxidant, but you do need to use something applied to clean and bright aluminum. I would use a 3M/scotchbrite surface conditioning disc (or similar from Home Depot, etc) for surface preparation.

  2. If you want to get away from black water, my choice would be a composting toilet. I know several folks who have gone to one, and they all seem quite happy with the way they work - but also state that there is a bit of a learning curve on care and feeding.

  3. Well, tied to that inspection legislation was a requirement for diesel emission testing. Does anyone know that status of that? That would really pose a problem for "never show" Texans.

I think a lot of people are placing too much faith in the ability of government to implement a new policy in a timely manner.

I remember when North Carolina switched (moved away from windshield stickers and tied it to registration) there was almost 2 years that you could renew without ANY inspection because they had abandoned the old system but not yet implemented the new. So DMV had no way of knowing whether the inspection had taken place.

  4. Sorry but I have to disagree Kirk. I can renew registration totally through the mail if it is not tied to inspection. I went over a year without an inspection because my truck was out of state that long. When I first brought it back into state I had it inspected immediately. No problem. New method, total problem.

New system was probably a screw-up tied to some other scheme or thought to be good idea. I don't think pointing fingers at Escapees at this point it usefull. I think contacting legislators will have best chance of correcting it. I think we need to try educate as many people as possibe about the effect of this is important. It is much more than RV'rs. What about the family that is with their child here in Memphis who is at St. Jude. Are they going to drive back to Texas to get an inspection. What about the employee that is working out of state for an extended period say in N. Dakota. Are they going to have to time their work schedule to their vehicle registration? This has the potential to create a huge mess.

Exactly - I really think that RVers are in the minority of those impacted.

FWIW, I have two vehicles tagged in TX that have never been inspected in the state since I've owned them (one never, the other by the PO because he lived in TX)

  5. I see a lot of pickup trucks and sedans all over the US with Texas plates. I guess it is because TX is such an inexpensive state to keep a vehicle registered in people just don't change when they move.

Any changes are going to impact many, many more people than just RV and military folks.
