    AZ MDT Registration - UPDATE

Been full timing for 16 years driving an International 4700 MDT with Florida registration using standard drivers license. Decided to stop full timing and change resident to Arizona. Went to DMV in Yuma, AZ to change registration and drivers license. They were adamant that a CDL was required. Not only that, but in my driving test using my MDT, I could not tow my fiver. I had to locate a flat bed trailer to tow. Have decided for the time being to to stay with Florida. Anyone else registered a MDT in Arizona? Jer UPDATE In AZ, if you are registering a truck that has a GVWR of 20,001 lbs or higher, you are required to have a CDL. As it turns out, when Weirs converted my "cab/chassis" truck to a "RV Hauler", they re-certified the truck to a GVWR of 20,000 lbs instead of 20,001 lbs and placed a sticker on the driver's side door jam. I had never noticed this change. Florida did not ask when I registered my truck in Florida. I took a picture of the sticker and showed it to AZ DMV personnel. My wife and I are now Arizonians with AZ Drivers License and have our car, truck and fiver registered in Arizona. At first they were going to give me a commercial plate for the truck, but after a bit of back-and-forth they agreed to give me what they referred to as a "truck/tractor" plate. It does not have any wording on it, just numbers. The cost was $350.26 with a weight of 19,000 lbs. I gave a weight of 19,000 because the truck weighs 13,500 with full fuel, tools, a couple of passengers and a pin weigh of 4000. I wanted a little leeway, and there was no difference in cost for 18,000. By the way, I took a picture of my truck and a picture of the sticker to the Port-of-Entry here in Yuma before I went to DMV. The officers agreed I did not need a CDL and told me to call if DMV still insisted. Jer

    Update Posting

How do you update an old posting. I located a post from Jan and did an edit. I figure it would then show up as unread but it didn't. What I do wrong, or didn't do? Jer

    Battery Storage in Hot Weather

What about my truck batteries? I have had them on a trickle charge since last October. Should I leave them on the trickle charge or remove the charger and let them set until I return in October? Jer

    Battery Storage in Hot Weather

As noted in the posting, I will not be able to check the batteries for at least four months. Jer
  5. I will not be using my Fiver this summer. It will be stored outside in Yuma, AZ where the temps will reach 120. I have a solar system with 4 Siemens 75 watt panels, controlled by a Blue Sky Energy Solar Boost 50, feeding 4 Sam's Club deep cycle batteries. Would it be better to leave the batteries in place in the fiver, or, move the batteries to my garage and place them on a trickle charge with a Battery Minder? Temps are going to reach above 120 in both the fiver and the garage, probable around 130-140 in the garage. I will not be able to check on the batteries for at least four months. I am worried about battery water levels in either situation. I think it would be less of a worry with the Battery Minder. Should any precautions be taken with the panels themselves? Jer

Just talked to State police on CDL requirements

I recently tried to register my MDT In AZ without getting a CDL. Could not do it. Jer
  7. I want to swap my VIP722K for a Hopper 3. I understand the hardward requirements. My concern is the cabling in my 2000 Traver Supreme Fiver. I know the cabling is RG6. But, I am pretty sure it is not rated at 3 GHz. So, how critical is the cabling. What happens to the signal if the RG6 is not rated at 3 GHz? Is the signal broken up, does it not appear at all, is it intermittent or is it an unknown? Jer

    Towing In EXtreme Temps

My "Mountain Directory West" says the following regarding the grade just south of Yarnell, AZ. "The descent going south is about 5 1/2 miles of 5-6% grade with many 25 and 30 mph curves and a couple of 20 mph hairpin turns." Going north I would have to make this climb. Sounds worse then the climb out of Black City Cannon on I-17. On other thought is, if I have any problems going the Yarnell route I am out in the middle of nowhere. My rig is in good condition. I am just worried about heat conditions. Jer

Black Tank Valve Not Closing All The Way

Thanks all. Good advice and suggestions. I have replaced the seals in this valve a couple of times over the last 16 years that we have been fulltiming. Hopefully this will be the last time. Really a PITA because of the valves Travel Supreme used and the way they installed them. Jer

    Towing In EXtreme Temps

I also have Pressure Pro. Leaving early but trying to plan so as not to hit Phoenix rush hour traffic. Tipper I'm 56 feet long. I thought 89 was very curvy and would be much slower. Will give it more thought. Have you been passed Congress all the way to Prescott. Jerry
