Keeping in touch-Class of 2006

We are in Jackson, Wy until the end of September. This Friday and Saturday we toured Yellowstone....the upper and lower falls are fantastic with all the snow melt. We really liked the Canyon Drive along Firehole River too! Some fellow volunteers took our daughter and I floating down the Snake river in inflatable canoes last week. That was a great day. Morning lows are still in the 40's...for this Tx girl that is dreamy in July! If you swing thru this way, give us a jingle!

We are at Ellsworth Air Force Base in Rapid City, SD for the next week waiting for the heat dome to dissipate or move east. In the meantime, we will see Mt. Rushmore (once in the daytime, then once at night when they have a lighting ceremony); The Crazy Horse Monument; Wall Drug. . .otherwise relaxing from our many weeks of daily touring Napa Valley; Reno, NV; Yellowstone & Devil's Tower. It's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it!!

Well, today is our last day at Ellsworth AFB in Rapid City, SD. Tonight we will go and see the Mt. Rushmore Lighting Ceremony and get a closer look at this monument. We drove by it in daylight a few days ago on the way to the Crazy Horse Monument (see our blog). Since we only drive at night under extreme emergency conditions, we will be taking a tour purchased here at Ellsworth AFB from their outdoors activities facility. . .Jeff doesn't have to drive so he can see everything without having to watch the road. . .which he does most of the time!! Tomorrow we continue eastward. . .next destination is Desmet, SD to see the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Site (author of the Little House On The Prairie books) for those inquiring minds who want to know! Later. . . . .

That nightime ceremony at Mr. Rushmore is awesome! Jeff will really enjoy it!

On the main road to the Badlands N.P. is a National Monument...actually a couple of trailer offices parked beside each other. This is the Minuteman Silo tour office where they set up a tour of the two-man launch controll center (buried underground) and also a tour out to a minuteman silo where a missle would have been launched from.

Extremely interesting tours.

My Chemotheropy went well, no drastic effects from it. It did shrink the tumors and they have now started the next phase. I get radiation treatments 5 days a week at Stanford and then more chemo every other week here at the VA Hospital.

The doctors are causaly hopeful they can get all the cancer but they don't think they can save the left eye because the tumor is laying against the optic nerve so the radiation blasts both.

Does anyone have room on their sofa?? I still want to travel!!!!

Hey Steve. . .we are hoping your left eye will beat the odds; and glad to hear chemo came out better than expected. The Mt. Rushmore lighting ceremony was moving and well worth the tour cost to get there (we don't drive at night if at all possible). We didn't get to The Badlands NP or the Minuteman Silos. . .time to arrive at Gt. Lakes VA is cramping our style! We even had to pass up The Spam Museum in Southeastern Minnesota. . .now, that's too much!!!:( Suzanne posted our blog about the trip to Mt. Rushmore. . .if you get an opportunity, read about the hailstorm that preceded our excursion! We would offer our sofa for your use, but you would have a wrestling match with Madison as to who gets sleeping privileges on it. Please continue the updates on your treatment; and hang in there big guy!

Well, today we finally return to Gt. Lakes Naval Training Center FamCamp for a two month stay visiting with Adam & Laura; and getting the yearly medical stuff done. This is probably as close to a "home base" as anything since we keep showing up here! But, we have a beautiful view of Lake Michigan only yards away from our front window!

We are currently in Grand Junction, CO - just did the Colorado Monument Canyon drive - spectacular.

It is HOT here - 94 today. We're moving up to Gunnison tomorrow to get into some cooler weather. After Labor Day we're going to stop and see the National Sand Dunes park north of Alamosa, go up to Colorado Springs to visit friends, drive into Kansas to spend at least a night (so we can fill it in on the map), then on down to Dallas to see the kids for a few days, before heading to Alabama and New Orleans to visit friends in October. I'm tired just thinking about it, but Dave told people we would "drop by"!laugh.gif

We've be in Mesa about the 13th of December.

Hey Barb,

That schedule makes me tired...and you're the ones doing it! Friends of ours just left Gunnison after staying a month. They sure enjoyed the cooler conditions. It looks like our warmest day of summer will be the 74 we had several days ago. It has already dropped back into the 60's.

We'll look for you across the street from us in mid December and maybe others will come by to join the fun. B)

Have a good day in Kansas(when you get there that is)....

We'll be at Hickory Creek from the 11th to the 28th of Nov, then we leave for Arizona. After putting new brakes on the coach, we're going to spend October and November in Texas to save some $$$$!Barb

Afternoon temperatures in the high mountains of eastern Idaho are running over 70 degrees! We just love it!

We're moving up into Montana on Sunday and will be in the Buffalo, Wyoming area beginning late next week. After visiting several places in Colorado and New Mexico during the month of October, we still expect to arrive at The Tiffany RV Park in Mesa, AZ on November 1. We look forward to seeing the Arizona winter bunch when y'all get there.

Safe travels everyone!

Gordan - we were in Buffalo, WY earlier this summer. We were unable to eat at the Occidental Hotel because the restaurant was closed during the two days we were there, but we were told it was a great experience. Hope you are able to check it out anyway as the hotel itself is quite historical.

Left Sedro-Woolley, WA yesterday morning at about 900 AM. Got about 90 miles down the road and blew a tire on the trailer. This was just outside North Bend, WA. Got the spare on and went into North Bend to the Les Schwab dealer. Got a new spare and as they were checking torque of the lug nuts noticed that the trailer frame was sitting on and wearing away part of one of the tires. Limped down the road about 3 miles to a repair shop. They could see nothing wrong except that the springs were almost flat. Spent the night in their front parking lot. This morning found out that while we have 7000# axles the springs were only rated for 300# (7000# axles times two is 14000# and 3000# springs times four is only 12000#) So my 13000# trailer weight sitting on the axles was actually over weight for the springs but not the axles. New springs were ordered and while waiting for them to make the 40 mile trip up from Seattle the shop took things apart. They then discovered that one of the equalizers between the two axles was way worn out. This was the major cause of the trailer frame sitting on the tire. New equalizers wont be here until 430 this afternoon and they are the first part needed to put things back together. Springs arrived already. So another night will be spent in Cascade Diesels front parking lot. Plans for being in Boise by Friday for our Granddaughter's birthday party on Saturday are not going to happen. Earliest departure time from North Bend seams to be about noon on Friday and Boise is about 500 miles away. Probably wont be in Boise until Sunday.

After getting new trailer springs, equalizers and extra frame support we were able to get back on the road about noon today. Cascade Diesel and RV Repair in North Bend WA sure did a great job and they only charged us for 6.5 hours work when it seamed to me that they put in 8-9 hours. Was pleasantry surprised when presented with the bill. Anyone needing RV or diesel engine repairs (from little PU's to those of us with the big engines) should keep Cascade Diesel and RV Repair in mind when in the area of North Bend, WA.

Put in a long day driving and made it to Eagles Hot Lake RV Park just outside of La Grande, OR.. Looking forward to a quite night away from the freeway noise. Should make it to Boise, ID in time for the Grand daughters birthday party tomorrow. Will be in Boise for about 10 days then heading south towards AZ.

We have finally left the shores of Lake Michigan and traveled slightly to the south. It's been a whirlwind of Dr's visits with a last trip to install Jeff's new dental bridge yesterday just before we left. We're currently parked at the Hollywood Casino RV park in Joliet while we visit a last time with our son and DIL. Tuesday we start heading for Nacogdoches by the end of the month for our yearly maintenance on the rig.

We're going to have rain tonight in the Dallas area. And boy do they need it. Still in the high 80s during the day, and barely drops into the 60s at night. Looks like this is going to change over the next few days. We're moving to Tyler on the 21st. Are you coming through Tyler on your way to Nacogdoches? We'll be in Tyler until November 11th until we move back to Hickory Creek.

We are sitting in Unadilla, Ga and the temps are in the high 60's. Humidity is a bit high, but in three days we start our trek west. Will arrive in Quartzsite, AZ for the winter on 1 November. Hope all are safe.
