Keeping in touch-Class of 2006

Hams,

Well, the knee has bothered me a bit here and there, but mostly ok.

I've been laid up this past week now with a right foot that is swollen and hurting bad. I think it's an attack of the Gout, but not sure. Anyway, it's been pretty presistant.

The swelling is down some now and the pain level is way down (although it still hurts) but I'm going to attempt Mackinac Island today.

I'll cross The Bridge to the UP on Monday and overnight at the same casino that Mike did. I hope my twenty bucks will do better!!

Enjoy the train ride.

Howdy everyone,

It's been a while since I have been on the forum and I wanted to update y'all on our current location.

We are still in Anchor Point, Alaska, located about 15 miles north of Homer on the Kenai Peninsula. We had originally planned leaving today for a drive over to Valdez and then slowly out of the state on our way back south. We had a little problem with our beagle buddy Bodie, but a good vet in Homer worked on him Saturday and he is on the mend. We will now leave on Thursday after Bodie gets a follow-up.

We have had a fantastic summer up here in the north country and are reluctant to leave. Our schedule to head outside depends entirely on the weather, both here in the state and along our escape route through Canada. Ten day forecasts are becoming very important to us...as unreliable as they may be. Maybe our first clue that it is time to leave will be white stuff falling from the sky!

We have been following all of your summer adventures and it looks like everyone is having a great time. We have also enjoyed seeing several old friends and meeting many new travel friends here in AK, but as always, look forward to seeing many of you when we get back to the Lower 48. We are certain to see Two Hams in DFW on our way back to the RGV and our winter digs in Mercedes, and hope to see many of you in south Texas during our stay. We will be at Llano Grande Lakes RV Resort from Nov 25 to Mar 25.

Everyone take care...and safe travels,

We're now in Plattsburg, New York. Spent the past week in Vermont at a park with NO cell phone (or air card) service. Otherwise it was a good park (PPA, $13/night) and FINALLY we had a week of good weather so did lots of sightseeing, eating maple sugar sweets, went to Ben & Jerry's, etc.

We will be here for 3 days then move down to Lake George for a week and then begin our move south and west hoping to be in Livingston by Halloween.

We're back in Texas after six weeks in Chicago. Lucky for us, Texas greeted us with unseasonably cooler weather so it hasn't been such a shock to our systems.

We're in the process of getting the Airstream redded up for sale icon_frown.gif It'll be a wrench, but it was the right decision at the right time.

We bought some new furniture today for our apartment - never thought we'd be doing that again!

Anyone who moves through the DFW area be sure to get in touch with us - we travel the fulltime life vicariously now.

Jeff's pump is working really well, by the way.

Hey Dave and Barb - was that Vermont park close to Montpelier? We might have stayed there.

Hello, friends icon_smile.gif

Glad to hear that Jeff is succeeding with his pump and Steve is not hurting too bad to enjoy life. Mike, we are going north next year, so we will look forward to your recommendations. Enjoy Rt 66. Did you find the book about it, so you can locate the lost pieces?

Did anyone crossing North Dakota stop to enjoy Roosevelt National Park? It is pretty awesome. Last year we also wandered down a side road near there to admire the locals' metal sculptures. (Enchanted Highway) They were a fun break in the road trip. If you noticed the geese against the iron sunset at the I94 exchange, that was the start of a dozen huge and creative scenes.

Keith and Gail are chillin' with the children in Columbus. Yesterday I splashed with two waterbabies in their pool. Last night Keith took three to watch the mighty Buckeyes practice football and tonight to a minor league baseball game. Today I watch two tykes while their parents work. Tomorrow we will take six between the ages of 3 and 15 to a water park. If we wear ourselves out completely, it won't hurt so bad when we leave on Sunday, right?

From Columbus, OH, we are anticipating our next move to our first NOMADS activity near Canton OH. NOMADS fix up places like the campground we are going to and we are looking forward to adult fun with that group as well as hard labor.

Hey there Gail, Keith and y’all, I was a little freaked out by my stop in Saint Louie but I am enjoying the old highway. Plan on spending most of the day down the road apiece at the Route 66 State Park. I’ve missed a few things but have seen lots of cool stuff too. I do have a book and I’m using the web too but I could sure use a good navigator. I highly encourage anyone in the St Louis area on October 4th to attend the Route 66 Festival. It sounds like lots of fun and there will be plenty of security there. Cheers for now……………………………mike

After twelve weeks in Nikiski, Alaska....we pulled up the jacks and got back on the road. Three months of workcamping done and two months to travel before the next job in S. Tx. (if you can call this work). The dogs most certainly enjoyed the climate here over Texas and so did we. We took down the dining table so we could bring in the freezer of fish...no need to buy meat for the next year, but we will be eating on our laps. LOL....Anyone attending the SKP Sept crab rally over by Coos Bay, Or?

ooo, I forgot to add, tonight we look forward to our first TV signal in 12 weeks...Am I in time to see the olympic closing ceremonies?

TV is soooo nice and watching the games, yahoo

Tell Juanita to check out this recipe. I found it at www.cookitfrozen.com.

2 Ramen (or similar)

salmon

mixed veggies

2 cups of water and dry spice from noodles inlarge skillet. Bring to boil, add salmon skin down and place on simmer with lid on. Cook 6 mins then flip salmon over, add broken up noodles and fresh or steamed frozen veggies. Stir and add a shot of soy sauce, cook 2 mins if fish defrosted, 4 mins if frozen when started.

Darlene told me about Salmon Rub at Three Bears, maybe they have one in Valdez if you are interested, it was easily cooked in 2 tbs of olive oil and 2 tbs of rub per filet. Kinda spicy and sweet but a $30 meal with some veggies. FYI....a hamburger meal up here is $10. I heard my mom on the phone today in TX ordering at Whataburger, I swear my mouth started watering.

JnD,

Yup. I expect to be in Los Banos for the Chapter One Thankgsgiving Ralley, then up to the Marysville, CA area for the winter.

Going by way of the Black Hills 'cause I've never been there.

Think I better get a move on...it's turned into Fall Weather here in the Michigan U.P. already!!!

Vern,

John found a great back doctor in Soldotna. Some fresh ideas. I think, Wash U did a study on back surgeries two years after only 20% stated they were any better.

JnD,

Where is Soldotna?

Vern just got back from the neurosurgeon, and I guess the surgery is a go. He has some spinal stenosis causing his leg to go numb. Guess the surgery is very straight forward, the recovery is not too long. Hopefully, we can still be out of Michigan by the first part of October.

We'll guys, we've passed the point of no return - sold the big red truck and bought a Hyundai Sonata plus we now have the Airstream up for sale icon_frown.gif

We're still officially "homeless" since we are staying at our daughter's house in Arlington, but will move to our new apartment in a couple of weeks.

Sorry to hear about Vern's surgery and glad to hear that Sue won't need any. Jeff is setting up Dr. appts in Dallas - will probably have surgery on his carpal tunnel/diabetic neuropathy as soon as can be scheduled. Still wearing the Frankenstein boot on the right and staying in wheelchair majority of time.

We love reading about everyone's travels. Keep it up!

Make sure the doc knows to keep the scar small and attractive. icon_smile.gif That is the same surgery John had on L3-L5 both sides of the spine. Soldotna was on the Kenai in Alaska, since it is required to see a doc every 90 days he did so and really liked him.

I don't know what it is about Alaska but the longer we visit the more John talks about "living here" icon_eek.gif Yesterday we attended the alaskan state fair in t-shirts the weather was so nice and wow they grow some big vegetables! The plan is to move on to Denali for the weekend, and we better do that, or John will have me working on the slope and becoming an Alaskan resident, not this Texan, lol

I haven't made that Alaskan Run yet but it will have to go some to beat the U.P. of Michigan!!

Of course, they don't have Grizzles here, just Black Bears, but the contry is great, the fishing is good and the fall colors are just starting......I'm lovin it!!
