Hi Steve,

When you get up to the Sleeping Bear Dunes, stay at the D.H.Day Campground. They have a site(84) that's used by hosts normally that's not used this year, so it's open. It's 50amp with water and if you have the "Old Farts Card" it's only $11day. We went for 2days and ended up spending 11 ........ Make sure you visit the wineries near there and if you see a book called " From The Vine ", it was wrote by our daughter-in-law. DAVE&TONI

Dave & Toni,

COOL!! Thanks for the tips. I'll keep and eye open for that book..I understand there is a good wine region a little further north (here in Michigan) so I'm sure I'll do some exploring & tasting.

Where are you guys at now anyway? On the way West yet?

Steve, I believe Leelanau County is the best wine area in MI.

You'll be passing through my favorite part of lower MI....HWY-22 and the town of Frankfort...real pretty area.

We will probably head that way when we get done here.

Michigan....nice place to visit, but I don't want to live here anymore!

Have a good time while you're here.

Hi Steve,

We're headed west after 2 months with the Grandbabies .... Right now, we're in the northeast corner of Iowa heading to Montana. Vern & Sue are right about the Leelanau area as well as the lower right side of the state. We tend to spend more time up by the Sleeping Bear area because of our daughter-in-law's from there. DAVE

Thanks for all the info.

Right now I'm at a C2C campground near Pentwater for 5 days then up to Sleeping Bear.

Tomorrow is the big finnish of Coast Guard Week at Grand Harbor and I'll drive down and spend the day...I understand the fireworks are truely spectacular.

Looks like I'm about a month behind Dave & Toni and following pretty much the same route.

Just got my Travel Book from AAA and I've been marking all the stuff to see & do in Minn. and S.D.. Way too much to see (isn't there always!!).

John and I plan to pop back into the lower 48 around the middle of September and then back to the RGV for the Nov-Jan time slot again. I was worried about Laguna Atascosa NWR where we volunteer but all is fine, a loss of trees, the visitor center roof sustained damage (good thing, cause it already leaked, maybe now a new roof) and some shingles off the resident housing.

John and I went clamming today, wow that was fun, we laughed and laughed at ourselves trying to dig those razor clams out of the mud. We even got to do some great 4 wheeling getting down to the beach. The weather this week has been spendid. Clear, dry and reaching the 70's. We really have enjoyed this trip, missed the sun, but this week has helped. hugs to all!

Oh Steve, you will love Sleeping Bear Dunes and the local area. Last year we stopped for two days and stayed a week. We went up to the dunes and buried the dogs up to their necks in the cool sand for fun. The scenic drive was very lovely and then we also took a day trip out to the mariner park visiting the museum there and of course chattin up all the voulunteers. I think John and I enjoy this life partly because there is always someone to to BS with, LOL

Hey Steve, The last place I had a sticks and bricks was near Rochester MN. Will you be in the southern part of the state? I can give you some places to see if you will be. The SPAM museum, Mayo Clinic, etc.......(Mayo is great to tour even if you aren't sick)

I'm about to toss a coin as to whether to go to Yellowstone or Black Canyon of the Gunnison when I finish my stint at Dinosaur. I've been to Yellowstone a couple of times, but never to Black Canyon. Any opinions???

We're back in Bangor, Maine. Between the high prices (over $6/gallon for diesel), bad roads, lack of signage, rain, and a holiday weekend we didn't know about, we decided we weren't going to get to see much more in Nova Scotia or PEI, so we headed back.

Had a hilarious time coming through customs. We decided to drive up through part of New Brunswick and come across at Houlten, Maine on I-95. We turn off of TC 2 and proceed to the crossing - no traffic until we turn a bend in the road and there is probably 3/4 of a mile of 2 lane traffic stopped. We slowly inch forward until we can see a small sign up ahead (probably 1000 feet from the crossing) that says all RV's and Campers (don't get me started on the improper use of the 's there or why campers aren't RVs) have to be in the left lane. Right now you know which lane we were in! icon_biggrin.gif There is no way to quickly sneak into the proper lane when you are some 50+ ft long with the toad behind. 45 minutes after coming to a stop we finally made it to the guard station. First thing we were asked to do is put on the brake and shut off the motor - so he could talk calmly to us and we wouldn't waste any of that expensive fuel! At least he was pleasant - after a few questions and a walk to the back of the MH and peering into the windows of the toad he handed us back out passports and away we went. Not a bad crossing except for the backup. Hopefully when they get the renovations completed (4 of the checkpoints were closed for renovations) things will move quicker. Now if they could just do something about signage.

We'll be here for about a week (going to Bar Harbor, etc.) and then move into New Hampshire and Vermont on our way to Plattsburg, New York.

Barb & Dave - I think you should write a book on boarder crossings! When you're at Bar Harbor and you take the drive around the island to the Blow Hole, you'll pass a small sign on the right announcing a Gardens. Small sign, small front but it goes way back in and is BEAUTIFUL to walk through. Can't think of the name of the place off hand.

Judy - I really enjoyed the Black Canyon. Not a lot of people but very senic and cool (I like cool weather).

John-n-Diana - Just got the AAA tour book so I'm still working on my route but I did check off the Spam Museum as a place to visit if I can work it in. I'll let ya know.

icon_wink.gifGood Morning from The Beautiful "Tri-Valley" of the "Bay Area" of Nornhern Caifornia...

Yep...we're back at the Alameda County Fair Grounds in Pleasanton...We were greeted by the Camp Host...a very nice lady that we had met before...and after hugs all around we got settled...Palm trees, flamingos and all...I tell ya, I love my little oasis in the gravel park that we stay in here... icon_biggrin.gif

We do have "Full Hook-ups" and "50 AMP" service which is awesome...we have not had that for a very long time... we've been on "Blue Boy/Honey Wagon, and 30 AMP" since last December...Makes life much easier when we have all the comforts of "home", since we are "home"... icon_smile.gif

Anyway you guys know just what I'm talkin about... icon_wink.gif

It has been a rather mild summer here in NorCal...Lots of fires but the temps were only really bad for about one week so far...We were up in the foothills for most of the time from March through yesterday...

Mike is working now. This year we think we'll be moving aroung with work a little...a month here in Pleasanton then up to Oroville in September, (Gordon,I think we'll stay at the Feather Falls KOA that you and Juanita stayed in whe we saw you last) then back here probably for a while longer...We're hoping to stay working through the end of the year... icon_wink.gif

Then go back on the road (our daughter Harmony's wedding on April 18 in Florida), for the rest of the Winter and Spring and end up in Astoria in June and back in Sonora by the first of July...for a couple of months volunteering at the Ranch in Sonora before work should set in again...

We hope tio get to come and see all you TX people on our way...we are gonna take it slow and smellevery rose along the way this time...

Of course, as we all know...this all is subject to the interuptions of life...As we make our plans..."The Man Up Stairs" kinda giggles...Oh well...I have always heard that "Those who fail to plan, plan to fail"...so I always will have a plan...I might have to adjust it many times...but a plan, I will have... icon_biggrin.gif

Jeff & Sue...I am so glad to hear of the progress on the health issues...I hope and pray that they continue to progress as expected... and a "Quad" sounds like a good idea to me... icon_biggrin.gif

Sue, how are you doing these days...taking dare of that sweet man of yours...I bet he is a great patient...

Well, "hello" and big "SKIP" hugs to you all...

From us in the "Beautiful Bay Area Of Northern California"...

Charlie,

Welcome home! I'll come visit ya again I'm sure, either there in Pleseaton or at Feather Falls.

Say, what are the weekly & monthly rates there at the fairgrounds?

I know I'll have to visit the VA Hospital in Livermore when I get back to California (think November?) so might just hook up there.

Our Family Homestead is in Loma Rica, 18.5 miles to Feather Falls via the back road. That's where I stay in NorCal until it gets either too hot&dry or too wet. To tell you the truth, I like the Gold Country Casino a lot better....GREAT steakhouse there.

Dave & Toni - Corn Palace is also on the list of places to see. Sooooo many places, so little time!!

icon_smile.gifHey there Steve...Good to hear from you...We'd love to see you again...I bet I could whip another dinner for ya!!!! icon_wink.gif

The rates here at the Fairgrounds are pretty high...33 to 35 dollars a night icon_frown.gif...you know the park...no aminities at all...just sewer electric (up to 50AMP) and of course water...it is clean...and in the middle of everything in the Bay Area...and for us it is close to Mike's work...We have looked for cheeper places to stay and there are just not any...there is a TT in Morgan Hill, but that is too far South for work...we love that park though...

Where is the Gold Country Casino? Do they have and RV Park? The KOA at Feather Falls is about the same price as here. icon_frown.gif But the park is really nice with lots of aminities...

We have never stayed at Feather Falls but we did visit Gordon and Juanita when they were there a while back...we were staying at Lake Menden in Nicolaus at tht time...What is the food like at that casino (Feather Falls)?

Looks like that the latest Tropical Storm hitting the Southetn coast of TX, Houston, Galvaston even Lake Charles, LA, is just a BIG rain storm...not too much wind...some flooding but much needed rain for the area...We sure need rain in NorCal...Lake Shasta, Lake Oroville, Lake Molinos (sp?) and Folsom Lake are just "mud puddles"... icon_frown.gif

Catch ya later

Dave & Toni - I now have an IPOD (No, the Iphone is still too advanced for me!!)! I'm all set for those long, sleepy highways (like hwy 50 in Nevada...THAT road went on forever!).

Charlie - I know the fairgrounds is expensive but if I have do visit the VA hospital more than once it's still cheaper than a motel. I'd likely have to stay a week or two.

Gold Country does not have an RV park but it's about 5 or 6 miles away from Feather Falls, on the same side of Oreville, just more to the back than the south. Darn nice casino; much newer than Feather Falls.

Melvis,

We must have passed on the road!

I just saw from FRAPPER that you're in Ludington, MI. I just left there 5 days ago and am now in Gaylord, MI, heading for the UP (and then West to SD).

If you are into flowers and statues at all check out the Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids. Place is awesome.

Hey Steve, The last time I drove across SD on I-90, I stopped at the welcome center to the state and purchased a $15 CD on traveling across the state. It was great and gave lots of history of the Lewis & Clark expedition as well as places to see along the way. The beauty of the CD was that you could turn it in at the opposite end of the state and get $10 back. It really added some zest to the long boring hours. I wish every state had this available. I haven't gotten into I-pods or whatever yet...I enjoyed the CD.

Judy,

Hay, thanks for the tip. Sounds like a great deal for an old history buff like me!

Just saw an ad in Workamper News...they need help at a Wildlife Refuge up in Fairbanks. Sounds great, right down your alley, and everyone heading back down south can stop in and tell you "howdy".
