rickeieio
I've been toying with finding a camera that would bluetooth to my phone, that could be used for various purposes, like hitching up, backing up to an obstacle, looking for leaks, etc. I would of course like it to be cheap. but in the real world, junk isn't cheap. Rechargeable unit is a plus, ability to fasten it to a stick to poke into suspected problem arears would be desirable. It would serve as a hitching camera for when my Hitching Princess is unavailable, or perhaps stick it to the rear of the camper when backing into tight spots. I've found several cameras that would do all this, but they seem to have a range of "up to 50' ". Unacceptable. So, have any of you tried such a camera, and would you recommend it? I don't want wires, or a screen on the dash. I want something I can view with my phone so as to be useful in situations away from the camper rig. Av8r3400
The "Bluetooth" link does not have a lot of range, by it's very nature. I had a bluetooth app that would connect my phone to a GoPro. I was able to get it to connect only as far as my hitch on the truck. Attaching the camera anywhere on the trailer was no-bueno. The interference from the steel cab of the truck also limits the range. That would be line of sight in that mile. If you can't see the other person, it's likely you would not be able to talk with them directly. That does change if you have multiple people on the same type of device and then you can greatly extend the range (so I have heard). Mesh is what I think they call it. rickeieio
Rod, I realize that the 1 mile is line of sight, but it still works well at 1/4 mile without line of sight. So, I was hoping I could find something that would reach more than 50', even with some obstacles. Our communicators are mesh capable, but as we rarely ride with a group, we've not tried it. I didn't know that there were some capable to get that far. I can sometimes leave my phone on the bike and go into the house to get something I've forgotten and still hear the music, but if the bike is in front of the truck, the truck is in front of the trailer and I enter the trailer the music almost always stops. I don't ride in groups anymore and when I did all we had were CB radios. I tried to convert a few when the Bluetooth helmet devices first came out, but they were not ready yet. Not sure if that group still has the every Sunday rides in Florida or not. Hope you find a solution and share what you find. Also rotatable lens and on-device screen for aiming. I have one and use it for multiple situations. Works really good. You might want to review this link for more info on bluetooth power, frequency, range, etc. My personal feeling is NOT to go bluetooth - stick to WiFi. https://techreviewadvisor.com/bluetooth-range-how-far-can-it-go/ Quote Randy, Nancy and Oscar "The Great White" - 2004 Volvo VNL670, D12, 10-speed, converted to single axle pulling a Keystone Cambridge 5th wheel, 40', 4 slides and about 19,000# with empty tanks. rickeieio
Randy, Thanks for the links. It would seem that wifi might be a better choice, but I know my phone won't pick up the inverter wifi from the truck cab. That said, the inverter is mounted in the basement of the trailer, in the compartment behind the genny compartment......... So. perhaps a little testing is in order. Maybe I'll see if our phones can hot-spot to each other in the same positions as I'm looking to use a camera. I really don't want more wires, and especially more screens.
