house
I just got done pulling my flatbed off so that I can reinstall a commercial hitch on my truck. I purchased one from a local shop, th was torched off the frame. Is it safe to reuse the bolts assuming they come off in good shape? I would love to hear your opinions
Av8r3400
Why would you want to? New hardware can not be that expensive. house
They are not the kind of bolts I can just pick up at tractor supply, they are shoulder bolts and they have a smooth section on them. Just worried I will use the wrong bolts and have issues.
jenandjon
I reused them. That's what is holding my 5th wheel plate on. I know someone will probably argue but We reuse them all the time. They are frame bolts. Most of them are fine thread. Deezl Smoke
Are you selling the truck or just using it temporarily for your own use with the commercial? It's a tough question to answer online. But, IMO, if the used bolts are installed correctly, the chances of bolt failure are so low I doubt the odds can even be calculated. IMO. house
I am purchasing a new horse trailer, I have to go pick it up in Colorado, and it is a converted dry van trailer. So I need the commercial 5th wheel hitch and figure out the air lines. I am probably going to have to end up buying another truck that has dual tandems to support the weight but just to go get the trailer I think this is my best option I think. rickeieio
Considering that you're pulling an empty trailer, I would re-use the bolts. However, the nuts should be locking type with nylon inserts (Ny-Loc), and I would source new nuts. ddm502001
McMaster Carr is your friend here, can also seek out Fastener Suppliers as they will have Shoulder Bolts and Shouldered Lock Nuts. Preferably NOT Nylocks but Friction crimped Lock Nuts, those BTW are a DO NOT REUSE.
rickeieio
I mentioned Ny-Loc nuts because that's what Kenworth used on the factory hitch on our truck. I saved them to use in a low load situation someday.
