Jim and Avon
My wife and I will be traveling from Onalaska Texas, (near Livingston), to Talkeetna Alaska in April. We will be pulling a 30' travel trailer. Although we have pulled our trailer to AK twice before, we have never done it so early in the year. We are headed to Mt McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge off the Parks Hwy 2 hours south of Denali NP. We are headed there for seasonal employment with Princess Cruises. Anyone who has traveled in an RV at this time of the year with any advice would be helpful. We are guessing that we must stay in hotels and have our RV winterized. It normally would take us about 12 days for this trip, so the questions we have are - Will the driving be even slower in April? What about chains. Do you carry chains for a trailer? Are their any RV accommodations available along the way - especially in Canada? And, any source of knowledge about general weather and/or road conditions for that time of year. We plan to travel north via I-25 or I-35. Any comments or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Kirk W
While I can't help you with the early trip, I have stayed in that hotel and it has a spectacular view of Mt. Denali!
2gypsies
Although this Escapees forum is awesome and someone here may be able to help with your question you might want to post your question again on irv2.com It has a special section for Alaska/Canada and there are a few folks who post on it who live in Alaska and travel back and forth. Hopefully, they will see your post. Have a great summer!
