ms60ocb
I have read some reports that ancestral DNA results can only be found from hair only with the roots. I have a clipping (no roots known) of my mothers hair that could be 100 years old. Anyone have knowledge or results taken from hair clipping.. What firm or company does this. I have been told that maybe Heritage may have worked with hair but I didn't contact anyone. Now I have renewed interest as the hair is readily available. LindaH
I found this on a Google search: DNA Testing With Hair - IDTO DNA Paternity Testing Services In part, it says: "Can you get DNA from a strand of hair? Yes. The type of DNA found in the hair strand without the root is called mitochondria DNA. This type of DNA can be used to determine maternity only." dirtyboots
Interesting - I used to raise horses/cattle and for dna we HAD to have roots. Didn't know it was different for human. https://vgl.ucdavis.edu/sample-collection/cattle

As the article I linked to states, hair sample without the roots can only be used to determine maternity, not for any other uses.
