The attached link to a federal site first became available a few weeks ago.  I used it to find a local pharmacy that had the version of the booster I was seeking.

It's pretty easy to use.  You just type in the zip code you're interested in and select the Covid-19 vaccine version (e.g. Pfizer) you want, and it replies with a list with contact information for each site has the selected vaccine in stock.

Can't you get them at your local pharmacy?  That's where we've received both of our boosters.

Thanks, I forgot that.

Given the low vaccination rate in the Midwest, I would think your travel plans would prompt you to get the second booster.

Probably will, Barbara, and you make good sense.   But we have a couple weeks and on important things I like to check with knowledgeable people.

By all means talk to your primary care physician about this decision? We did and our doctor recommended we get ours now because we are going to be traveling. She believes that if needed there will be another vaccine in the fall. If you take the risk now you could get covid and not be here to get the vaccine in the fall!

Thanks Kirk, for your experience.   That's what we are going to do.   We have a few weeks before leaving for our workamping location, so we will be having that conversation....

That's what we are going to do.

We planned for 2 weeks between the latest booster and our trip but I just learned that with the latest booster, 1 week is long enough for it to kick in. Let us know what you choose to do.

I'll go against the grain here with my and DW's experiences.  Back in Feb. 2020 we both had covid before much was known about it.  Our symptoms were all of what was later to be known as covid.  We had bad coughs and fatigue for a few weeks but fortunately recovered with no problems.  We masked and quarantined that first year. Then last summer at a family trip we were exposed to Delta by a family member (DW and I were the only ones who weren't vaxed).  We had a cough similar to a sinus infection for a couple weeks but no other problems.  Two of the family including the one who exposed us were much sicker than us.  At Christmas we were both exposed to the latest variety but didn't get any symptoms.

So for us natural immunity from getting it very early has worked.  We have no intention to get the vaccine.  Our lifestyle is back to normal, but we aren't ones who spend much time in crowded areas.  Our summers are spent in the Colorado mountains.

Covid has taken it's toll on my family . Un-vaccinated as they are , I lost my oldest brother to Covid . Another brother spent time in the hospital because of it and is still not back to 100% . I nearly lost a sister to Covid prior to both those . She spent a long time in the hospital and is not back to 100% , either .

I'll do what ever it takes to stay healthy .

Goes around , comes around .

We each must make our own choices and while we may not always agree, that doesn't make anyone wrong. If you don't mind sharing, were you tested for covid19 and tested positive, or possibly later tested for antibodies?  And either way, thank you for sharing your experiences.

Nothing is 100% as our youngest son's daughter got the Omicron version, passed it to her mother and her mother to my son. Since all 3 were tested and all were fully vaccinated & boosted, it does show that some people do get it even if vaccinated. In this case the mom was the sickest and took about 5 days to feel better but was never in danger of hospitalization, the granddaughter(21) was pretty sick too but began to recover in 2 days and was back to work in 5 days. Our son(52) was sick for 3 days, describing his as like a hard cold with mussel aches. That all happened in Jan. of this year. A cousin of mine in KS had Covid before the vaccines and he was quite sick, he isolated himself in the basement rooms and managed to avoid passing it to his wife. Their doctor advised not to hospitalize if avoidable because it was in one of the big surges and he was sick for about 2 weeks and then took another month to fully recover. He too was tested and was positive. A good friend who declined to be vaccinated also got Covid last August, was put on a ventilator 4 days after his positive test and he died 8 days later. He would have been 70 if he had lived 4 more days.

My wife and I had our second Moderna booster shots yesterday at a nearby Walgreens. Other than the expected minor soreness at the injection site, we've had no side effects so far.

I’m probably younger than many, mid-50. I got the first available vaccination (J&J). Then a booster as soon as available.

a few month later, I got Covid. Presented as a mild cold, but positive via test. Didn’t affect my work as I’m IT and work from home.

at this time I don’t plan to get a 2nd booster, but may in the fall. I have felt for quite a while it will become an annual thing like recommended flu shots, which I also get.

Well, that didn't work at all. We hear on the news to get a 2 booster shot. That website has links to CVS, Walmart, and other business's; all of which have a screening webpage declaring a 2 booster is only for immuniocomprised people. I do not meet the qualification questions.

Sams Club in our city, where we got out other shots has stopped participating in the program.

FYI, the military is almost ready to begin vaccinating members with a new shot that is proven effective against all present and future mutations.

You posted that you have heart problems and asthma in addition to your age.  You qualify for the second booster.

Ray,

Sorry. I forgot to mention that CVS hadn't removed the immuniocomprised requirement from their website verbiage.  I ignored that mistake, didn't check any of the medical condition boxes, and received an appointment for 7 PM that night.

I suspect the same is true for the other locations you checked (that are still providing the boosters).

Wait, what? If this is true, then it is likely that this would be the first ever in the history of all vaccines that they are able to prove, in advance, the effectiveness of a vaccine against a mutation that has yet to happen.

Hi, Kirk.   We will get the (2nd) booster in early May, about two weeks before travel to our workamping location.   Come Fall, we will see what the situation calls for before visiting family in Michigan.

Thanks for a good thread!

Thanks for the links! I do not read them as saying that a single shot will treat future variants when you get one now. I read it that they have developed a platform that lets them alter the vaccine base as needed to treat future variants. It says that they basically can only treat 24 variants of COVID-19 and other SARS viruses. This is a pretty awesome advancement and if it passes all trials will certainly streamline the process of creating new or updated vaccines.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just as a matter of followup, My wife and I got our 2nd Covid booster shots (Moderna) this week.   Our shot reactions were as before, wife experienced no side effects other than a slightly stiff arm, and I had the stiffness, along with slight fever and headache for a couple days.   Doing fine now!

We both have four shots of Pfizer, the two primary and we got the boosted as we are immunocompromised with Lynn's asthma and me from my leg DVT and big clots in both lungs. My clots are gone but there was some damage and scarring so I am still on O2 nights only. I see my cardiopulmonary specialist in August for evaluation again. I made it this far, just turned 70, and am tickled to be here. I intend to stay as long as humanly possible and like in the military take all recommended vaccines. We wear masks everywhere still. Still a retired USAF Medic and scrub tech who cross-trained into Medical Lab Technologist which means the folks who did the tests and identification of pathogens chemistry tests, Urinalysis and everything from fecal microscopy to biopsy tissue and blood work. Then I did my last 20 years active duty teaching all the ground weapons and fixing them when they broke. Much more fun making loud noises, shooting and teaching the fun guns daily, and fixing them when they broke. Good health to all whatever your decisions are..
