Locast is designed to stream over the air TV stations only to areas within their local markets.  If you're within the market you can get the same programming using an OTA antenna.  If you're outside the market you have to use a VPN or other subterfuge to defeat the geofencing.

I looks like Locast has shut down after a court ruled against them.

Locast Shutting Down

What, I just watched it last Saturday? I can’t read the link as you need to subscribe. But Googled it. So sad.

The judge ruled on one narrow issue in the case that triggered an agreement between Locast and the networks that they would suspend operations to avoid possible major fines or penalties. I expect Locast's lawyers are closely looking at their appeal options. Don't count them out yet.

I hope not. I don’t use the app much, but when I do I enjoy it. Do you think use of VPNs are any concern?

No, I don't think the relatively few people using VPN's was an issue. There is no law preventing viewers from getting stations outside of their Nielsen designated market. Locast was using industry standard geo-locking, so there shouldn't have been any issue on that end either.
