Barbaraok
We are enjoying being in a high vaccine state but will revert back to semi-isolation come fall when we return to Mesa. Luckily, there are lots of restaurants that have outdoor seating in Arizona, especially Oct-Nov and Feb-March time frames. And we can always hope that more people in Arizona become vaccinated. To be specific they are asking the FDA for the go ahead to do clinical trials to see if the booster shot will improve the titer level (amount of Covid-19 antibodies) circulating relative to those who don't get a third booster shot. If trials do not show an improvement in level (which means 1/2 of the trial participants would get placebos and not the 3rd booster shot) then a booster will not be offered. The trial would also show if reactions to a 3rd shot are likely to be stronger than with the second shot. It is tricky to figure out when a booster is needed and what the likely reactions will be. UPDATE - so now they are asking for an EUA (emergency use authorization) to go ahead and begin a 3rd dose. Guess they information they are getting out of Israel have tipped in favor of getting the EUA while other trials of combinations are going on. Of course there are questions to be answered, specifically, will the 3rd dose be free, or will we have to pay, and how will we go about getting the 3rd dose to everyone, when they are trying to get 1st and 2nd doses in arms across the country. What fun it will be trying to figure out where to get boosters this fall while traveling. Of course, since it is only 1 shot, no worry about being able to get the second before leaving an area. RV_
Thanks for posting Packnrat. Lots of folks can have the same questions. That's the nice thing about science. They continually learn new things and publish. We have booster shots and they are talking about a bivalent vaccine for all previous versions and the current one. That lead line was all they knew on June 28th 2021 when I posted. And if you read the second paragraph it said that . . . "The findings add to growing evidence that most people immunized with the mRNA vaccines may not need boosters, so long as the virus and its variants do not evolve much beyond their current forms — which is not guaranteed. " And as we now know it did evolve very much beyond its current forms. That was published June 2021. Did you check on when we got the first vaccines approved for use in the US? August 23, 2021, two months later. It was published from the initial tests and we have learned a lot after we deployed the vaccines. Source: https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/fda-approves-first-covid-19-vaccine I am very grateful that we have dedicated scientists the world over. We have gotten the vaccines and the boosters and as well from then until now have worn masks in public to avoid a cross infection. Did you wear protective masks like the N-95 not the pleated ones. Which variant did you catch Delta or the new Omicron variant I posted about? There is more to prophylaxis of the COVID viruses than just getting vaccinated. Like Biden if you do public appearances without a mask with the new very transmissable Omicron variants you can still get a cross infection. Only the unvaccinated are being hospitalized today and dying. Published Tue, Jul 12 20221:27 PM EDTUpdated Thu, Jul 14 20227:55 AM EDT Excerpt: The omicron BA.5 subvariant is more transmissible than previous versions of Covid, resulting in a wave of infections and increased hospitalizations. But the number of hospitalizations and deaths are still much lower than the winter wave. BA.5 is better at evading the protection from vaccines, which means more people are getting mild illness, but the shots are still protecting against severe disease. RV_
Actually the shots do prevent you from getting the specific variant for which it was made according to the percentages of effectiveness found in the trials. So if 95% effective then it completely prevents infections in 95% of the people who take it only against the variant it used to manufacture against. However each specific to a variant vaccine is not as effective for subsequent variants but so far does keep cross-infections mild and usually not needing hospitalizations for the vaccinated and up to date on boosters. The scientific community is talking about a bivalent (works on two variants not just one)vaccine this fall or soon thereafter that will handle two variants, the original, or Delta, and the Omicron. This is an ongoing process. At some point we may lick all viruses or be able to defeat them all but today is not that day. We can lick them one at a time today, however. My son, the retired Army medic and former NCO incharge of inoculations at Ft Knox has been following the process closely and he referred me a while back that predicted that in time we will see Covid become much like the current influenza that killed so many back in 1918-19 but is not something with an annual serum and far less risk. As it happens, my mother lost her mother to influenza in 1918 but she was not here to see Covid.
