Do you think 140 to 49 is a better route than taking 99 past Merced to Chowchilla and then cutting across Avenue 26 / Road 603 to 41?  Thanks!

Different doesn't mean better; it simply means different. What is better depends only on the person involved. Some people like freeways but some avoid them. Some like going through small towns but some don't like slow travel. Without knowing what type of travel you prefer there is no way for us to guess the best route for you.

I'd recommend 99 Exit 155 at Madera to 145 to 41 north to Oakhurst and on to Bass Lake.

On Hwy 49 between Auburn and Oakhurst it's very steep... up to 9% grade.

That's the route we use.
