lappir
Good morning all, Not sure if this the place for this, but I will start it here. I'm not an audiophile or a musician, but I like to listen to music. I don't remember when, but many years ago I subscribed to "Sirius" when they had a portable device that would "record" 50 hours of music so you didn't have to have an external antenna, but could listen to commercial free music. I did that for several years until I realized all the portable devices seemed to last only a month beyond their warranty period I would have to buy a replacement. I found "Slacker" music for a monthly fee. I was happy. I could listen to music anywhere my phone had a connection either through the cell system or a WIFI connection. Then they raised the prices. Pandora was next and so far has stayed within my budget the unfortunate part is no matter how I try to vary my play lists, I always seem to listen to the same music all the time. Not too long ago I found "Discovery" as one of the playlist options. It says "listen to artists that are not typically on this station". I guess that means it's pulling artists off my other stations and putting it on this one. While I don't remember song names very well. I will say the first 10 songs that start to play when I hit "Shuffle" mode are always the same. Apparently Shuffle doesn't really mean "Mix them Up" like I think when playing cards. Now after you have read all this, does anyone have a fix? How do you get more variety? Thanks much in advance. docj
You don't say which Pandora subscription level you are currently paying for. It's my understanding that in addition to "free" there are two paid levels. We have the premium level and with it I know that my wife can search for a single song and have it played. I don't know if the "randomness" aspect of the music has the same issues you are describing but my wife is pleased with it and she's the audiophile in our family. RangeMaggotBob
I'm not quite sure what you're asking or what you're looking for. But you can buy a SIRIUS/XM boom box off of Ebay for a fairly inexpensive price. We pay just over $5.00 a month for each device- 1 each in our 2 vehicles and 1 for a home unit. There is something for everybody on SIRIUS and most of their receivers have the capability of retro-play. If you know what I mean. Hope this helps a little... lappir
Sorry I forgot to mention I have the Pandora Plus which is commercial free with unlimited skips. I may not be able to choose a song, (Usually don't remember the name/title anyway), but I can block artists and choose favorite songs. (Once you do, you hear it a LOT though, so stopped hitting the "Heart" or "Thumbs Up). What I'm wanting is to not have to skip the first 10 or so songs when I choose "Shuffle". I get tired of skipping and just give up. Twotoes
I had Sirius years ago paying $5 dollars a month X2 for 2 vehicles. I switched to Pandora for free. They do repeat the same songs often so after awhile I change to a different station. I will pick the name of an artist and get selections of many artists of the same type of music. I am now looking into Spotify as an alternative to Pandora but haven't used it yet. I have a LOT of saved channels and I have Plus, but on my favorite ones, it's the same dozen or so songs, over and over again. No variety whatsoever. I also stopped thumbing up or down. So, I'm following this thread to see if it goes anywhere. Jay Edited May 23, 2021 by Jaydrvr
NDBirdman
Guess I haven't noticed the repeats on my Pandora stations but I only listen to it a couple hours a week. I had Sirius, they kept over-billing me so I dropped them. The only thing I would like to find is a service that plays the same comedy channels as Sirius, that's just about all I listened too on there anywayz, except for the holidays. I've thought about reconnecting with Sirius XM on a phone app. All my vehicles/home stereo can connect to my iphone via blu-tooth. With all the free music streaming apps out there, I'm really surprised Sirius has not folded. NamMedevac 70
Well said Chief neon and I also use Amazon Prime Music on my smartphone that plays many many dozens of my favorite only songs that I bought cheap over many years. The phone I plug into my truck radio and use the truck speakers. At home I play the music on my TV using laptop connection. The shuffle feature works great and I can create playlist also. I have not separately subscribe to Prime music but buy the individual songs I choose however I am a Amazon Prime member. Capt. RV_
I know many have Apple phones and they have no Micro SD card. We were Pro Mobile DJs on weekends while active duty and it was very lucrative from 1983-2003. Then I got tired of hauling the equipment and the pay got too low so we quit then. However while I had ~ 27k cuts, I ripped them all and have them in three places so I won't have to do that again. I use Android phones and our old phones still are great and can handle micro SD Cards up to 1 TB. I just bought some 256GB micro SD cards and copied over my favorite music and we have much from Swing and big band and crooners of the 30s, 40s, and 50s, we have most hits and B sides from 1955-2003 and select from then to now. I also use Pandora Free, which I've had for many years but with all my music just needed a phone that took SD cards. No one buys CDs anymore but I still do at yard sales etc. and am finding most are played once, ripped then sold so they are pristine today. I have all my original CDs (and BluRay, BluRay 4k, and a few DVDs) in CaseLogic 200/250/300 disk binders, all legal. I also use Pandora/Amazon Prime music with my Bose Mini Soundlinks in the basement workout area and the master bath. I used to use the Phone music in my car and Lynn's but my Tesla has Tesla streaming music and videos when parked, so I really don't use or need paid services. I ripped my disks to mp3 @320kbps best quality for mp3. I am aware of the other codecs too for ripping at better fidelity but my hearing after 20 years of DJing and 20 years of my 27 years AF career running the rifle/pistol/machine gun/rockets/grenade launchers/shotgun ranges my hearing is terrible. So my big "audiophile" thing now is hearing dialogue on movies and music and having tight not booming bass. If I can't hear it it doesn't matter to me. I will not pay for Music unlimited or any other service, and we have Wave Radios and car radios if we choose to listen to some of the great new stuff. We have no aversion to crap music anymore (The C in Crap is silent) and have lots of Country and Jazz, but we are 60s rockers from day one and have a majority of that and Soul from DooWop/Motown on. Full Spotify is not free. Full Pandora is not free (did you know that SiriusXM owns Pandora?). I am trying to bounce around from artist to artist a bit more. It seems you get a bit more content from similar artists. It's not always good, but it is a change. Thanks again for the comments. RV_
I will have Amazon Prime regardless, for shopping and streaming videos, so I do use the Prime music App as well as Pandora free. Prime Music free has become repetitious too now. And they push their music unlimited service every time I used Prime. I will usually just use the Tesla streaming music channels in my car or play from my 256GB Micro SD card in my Android Motorola Z3. I made a master microSD card for each of our phones, and Surface tablets with our music, some pictures, and our documents. I just copy over the newest ripped to mp3 CDs to one and they all get it eventually. I am still buying CDs at yard sales etc for a buck or less each, then I rip it to my computer music library, take the case apart and put the CD and liner notes in the next open slot in the storage albums. Then for some I pop the micro SD Card from the phone into the desktop and copy it over and re-install in the phone. But it did take several decades and thousands of dollars to buy all those 3k plus CDs for our DJ biz over 20 years of DJing, so It costs either way.
