Rotorhead
Hello All, I am ready to pull the trigger on an HDT as part of my transition to a whole lot less work and more relaxation. Problem is is that so far I haven't found anyone who will insure an HDT for private use like my regular vehicles. Could someone please point me in the right direction? I have found a couple rigs I would like to check out but they won't last long. Thank you all, Chuck
Nwcid
I think the 3 main ones I see are Progressive and National General. Others say they are still getting policies but I did not have luck with either. State Farm seems to be most common right now. There are some others that use local companies or farm type insurance. It will also matter if you are registered as a truck or an RV. Quote 2014 Volvo 630. 2016 Fuzion 325T, RZR 900 Trail 675ah AGM, MSH 3012 inverter, 960w Solar. jenandjon
I am registered as RV. State Farm considers my HDT as a personal passenger vehicle. GlennWest
Progressive and National General will but lots of agents don't know it. geodog
If the truck is registered as a motorhome in Texas American National can insure it. Not all agents will pursue the policy. ShortyO
trimster
After searching and settling on Progressive, I found that not all agents can write a policy that will allow you to bobtail. Weird, but who knows why. We live in Utah and got our policy out of Lazydays RV in Florida. They understand what we are doing and the policy allows for bobtailing. Quote was quite good. Must do trailer and truck together. Our volvo is registered as a motorhome in Utah which helps. rickeieio
Our policy for our Volvo is also with Lazy Days/Progressive. When I called to add the Kenworth, the woman I spoke to got stuck on the fact that there's no restroom facilities in the truck. No matter how hard I tried to get her to read their own policy (no restroom required), she just shut down. So, just tell them it's a motorhome and give them the vin. More info just confuses them. Rotorhead
Thank you for all the great advice. I will give Lazy Days a call. I just want to make sure I have a place lined up where I know I can get insurance before I go buy the truck. Hopefully we can get it all online before next years rally. Rotorhead
One more question. if I just tell them it’s an RV and give them the VIN, won’t they see that it’s a HDT when they look it up? when I register it in Virginia it will be as a private truck, 3 axles. The paperwork has no place to check it as an RV. thanks

In Virginia do you have the ability to register as an RV? If so consider that approach, being an RV makes a few things easier (load limits, parking restrictions, insurance as examples). Rotorhead
I did not see anyway to mark it as an RV on the registration form. I’ll look again but I think it will be listed as a private 3 axle truck.
