Just read that the President opened all National Parks and public lands to all veterans for free.

That is huge news.  Makes you wonder why you only hear about it on a forum.

It will be diseminated more going forward but even with best efforts some won't be aware of it until some individual makes them aware by asking if they know about it.  In my volunteer position I constantly meet people that don't know about the federal senior pass or the one for disabilities.  Sometime even if they have one they forget to use it or don't remember what they can use it for.  Everyone can help themselves if they read appropriate signs of ask questions.

Another good reason to stay active on the forum. There are lot of people on the forum that are on the ball. I did not start using it until I had been an skp for about 5 years and it sure would have saved me a lot of hassels and sometimes money.

It was in the Military Times last Monday:

"Starting next month, veterans and Gold Star families will be able to visit national parks and other public lands for free, under a new initiative from the Department of the Interior announced on Wednesday."

When did the previous initiative expire?

Are you thinking of the expanded access to military FamCamps (and other privileges) that happened a while back? If so, those policies are still in effect.

There is an article in USA Today about the DOI's order:  https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel/experience/america/national-parks/2020/10/28/national-parks-give-free-entry-veterans-5th-graders-gold-star/6055843002/

It is good to follow the new media for your news.

In the DOI news release I see that the "DOI" made the order and there is mention of some bipartisan legislators supporting the order.  However those are the only elected officials I see that are mentioned.  No mention of any other significant elected officials.

Here is the DOI press release:    https://www.doi.gov/pressreleases/trump-administration-grants-gold-star-families-and-military-veterans-free-entrance

It eliminates all the news confusion.

Will they  be receiving any  additional funds from the Governmnet to off set the loss of  income as a veteran I would rather pay to support them.

I don't know how much of a financial hit it might be. I suspect a substantial number of veterans are already eligible for free entrance via senior / access passes. I was thinking of it as a convenience - if I don't happen to have my senior pass I'll be able to use my retired ID.

That said, the parks really don't need any reductions in income but should you feel so inclined any park I've been in had 1 or more donation boxes about.

The answer to your question is in the press release I provided as a hot link.

yes I saw that. It is a big number but with the number of folks that get free admission  and the number of parks it does not seem all that big.
