1st trip with new truck.

Recommended Posts

On level pavement is one thing, but with the axles articulating up and down over un-even terrain, it is common for a tire to contact a fender if the suspension airbags have been dumped.

There are other risks as well. One time, articulating over some un-even hard packed dirt at a truck stop in Roswell, I bent a fuel tap on the bottom of a low-hanging fuel tank when the fitting scraped on the ground.  Of course I was fully loaded. Luckily there were no fuel leaks.

So, just about home.  Traveled about 1000 miles. Average mpg.... 4.7

Ouch!

Maybe detuning this baby to 425hp?

If you were heading east it could have been the winds, we averaged only 5.75 from Oklahoma thru Kansas and partway thru Missouri and we had heavy cross and head winds all three of our travel days. I think it was the worst I have seen in 8 years with our HDT.

Was the mileage calculated or from the display? Our truck only has instantaneous, or lifetime average. If I want trip mileage, I have to calculate it. Detuning will definitely help, but if you drive by the boost gauge, you can maximize your mileage, and still keep the higher HP for just in case times. I think you have an OD iShift, so 3.08 shouldn't be hurting you any. Assuming you can keep it in OD, as much as possible. I don't worry too much about day mileage, or even trip mileage, as it typically averages out.

Our dash computer allows for lifetime (I think) and re-settable trip information. It had 160k worth of commercial use MPG (3.7mpg with a lot of idling). I reset that, so the numbers it comes up with are 'my miles'.

I let the trans pick the gears unless I'm tired of 800-1000 rpm lugging up a hill, then I down shift a gear and pick the rpms up to around 1300. We cruze at 65-70 mph on the flats. No rush up mountains but the truck can easily pull stiff grades at 55.

The computer gives me a percentage of time in the sweet zone for mpg. Seems I'm there 90% of the time.

Rolling out of Cortez today to Helper, Utah, then on to Salt Lake.

My feeling about mpg:

I enjoy the ride and feel that if I need to worry about fuel usage, I don't need to be doing this lifestyle.

I get about 8mpg unless in the mountains then close to 7.  Ours is an older 2001 Volvo with an ISX set at 500hp.  That is with the Subaru, RZR and Teton.  I cruise about 62 to 65 at about 1500 rpm.  It seems like your rig should do a little better than what it is?
