Transformer on 30 amp

Recommended Posts

Glenn, I have covered this topic before but here goes. As you well know, an RV 30 amp pedestal has but a single leg of 120 Volt 3600 Watts and no 240. If you can buy a dry transformer that steps 120 up to 240 plus has a center tapped secondary (used as Neutral) you can end up with "120/240 Volt Single Phase Three Wire" in which L1 or L2 are 120 VAC to Neutral but L1 to L2 is 240 for your 240 Volt Mini Split. As you indicate this can work PROVIDED THAT  it provides sufficient power ??? Being less then perfect you will get less then 3600 Watts output but if that's enough for your needs I say go for it.

PS if the transformer is an isolation type you would have a Floating Neutral.

It would be fun to see your system once completed, congratulations

Oh, I have figured a different approach. Going to put a 30 amp receptacle on my camper. Feed a 110 receptacle with it. Use battery charger for batteries. Posted this elsewhere but getting 2 maybe 3 15 amp chargers. They $150.00 each. Are for my Leaf battery pack.

Thanks for the update Glenn. Indeed that's a somewhat different subject and question that was first posted. To this new topic my thoughts are indeed if you have a 30 amp 120 Volt receptacle and a 15 or 20 amp 120 Volt receptacle adapter (for battery charger power cord) that can adequately supply a charger(s) that matches your battery charging requirements, GO FOR IT. Of course, there's only so much power available and your battery charger or multiple chargers  can't exceed that DUH lol.   I can envision a situation where 2 or more 120 Volt high capacity chargers (subject to their current requirements based on battery load) may well require MORE then any single 15 or 20 amp 120 Volt receptacle circuit can supply ?????

 Best wishes

John T
