One day third party whether open source or not will work for all three. Linux was first to adopt the "Evil Wintel" developed x86 computer.s with Intel chipsets. Then in 2005 Jobs abandoned their long outdated power PC chips for the Intel chipsets developed for IBM/Microsoft Windows. It is becoming a unified computer world hardware-wise. Apple is even trying out some AMD chips I hear.

The Linux kernel is the most widely ported operating system kernel in existence. It's been ported to everything from the hand-held ARM based iPAQ to all Android phones to IBM System Z9 and Z10 mainframes, and PC's of course. Many Windows programs work quite nicely on Linux based OS's. Maybe MS will adopt it next... :)
