I have the Jackalopee, the Hayes controller and I am terrified.

You flip over the panel with the application gauge in it and the hose that goes in the back of the gauge is your hose.  Don't cut it;  you put a tee in the end of it and a new hose to your unit and another new one to your gauge.  You don't have to go all the way to where it comes through the floor.  Amazon yourself a good tee for in the dash:

https://www.amazon.com/SMC-KV2T07-00-fitting-union-tee/dp/B00DD7BJS4/ref=sr_1_2?s=industrial&ie=UTF8&qid=1515645517&sr=1-2&keywords=KV2t07-00

If you don't want to tee that line then you can use your brake light switch down at the floor pass-thru.  Take out the switch, put in a 1/4" NPT run tee, then put the switch back in.  Look for this switch.  It is not the pointy shaped Hobbs ones with the 1/4 slides on them.  Those are the low air switches.

2246072.jpg

For power you go to your spare power plugs in the middle of the cab/dash cavity and find the spare unswitched.  Put a 1/4 slide spade into it and a fuse in the spare fuse # that matches the tag of the spare you used and you have power.  You have 7 of these to hook random stuff to.  If 20A isn't enough then you need to go to the circuit breaker right next door.  Looks like this:

CDLA_120sm.gif

Put a ring terminal on your power wire and put it on the "out" with the rest of the wires hooked to it.  You now have power.  Remember where this is because it is right next to your flasher.  You'll be changing that every couple years.  You'll see a whole bunch of wires going to a ground stud in there as well.  Put your ground there.  Any trailer harness stuff you make grounds here as well.  If you pull power from the dash harness then it grounds to the dash harness.

If you are putting the light converter in the sleeper then you pull the threshold cover off from the door, run the blue wire to the side, around your intake tubes, down the cowl, across the threshold, and into that toolbox.  I guess you could chop a hole in the floor to run a fat green trailer cable in as well, but the Peterbilt harness in the other thread keeps it all inside the cab and routes the same way as the blue wire.

Yes you are going to play whack-a-mole with popped out gauges for a week afterwards and gauge backlights are gonna keep falling off for the life of the truck.  That is the nature of the beast not being computer controlled and full optioned.  There's wires and hoses.  Lots of them.  They're all that way.

For the controller, Peterbilt would just use a self tapper or five.  A KW would have an AVK and a locktited screw.  If velcro works, no harm in that.  You are a machinist man, you can drill a pilot hole without poking too deep at full speed.  Nothing different here.  The big connectors and mass of wires is at the bottom with just some random wires in the middle.

The reason it is so daunting is cuz you aren't ready to harness just yet.  Make us a list of what all is going in and where it is going to mount.  Then we can figure the wires and best way to get signals to where they need to be.

Howdy Scrap,

Thanks for your highly detailed post, I was hoping you would chime in as your other posts were packed with information.

I am following most of what you wrote but can you explain this, "For power you go to your spare power plugs in the middle of the cab/dash cavity and find the spare unswitched. "  Please forgive my ignorance but is this cavity located under the top of the dash or behind the large panel that is under the dash.  I have had the entire dash torn apart a couple of times on the Freightliner it's SIMPLE compared to the Pete, I freely admit to being intimidated by all the gauges and switches on the Pete.

If it ever stops raining I can do some crawling around and looking for different things, or be able to leave the doors open, stand on the steps and look for and work on things, kinda hard to do when its raining all the time.  Thanks again for your post and please keep the information coming.

I am learning new stuff here so, your threads and questions in my opinion are great!

I get a chance to poke around now and again.  I have found some links that I hope will be of some help, if nothing else but to shed some light on the subject at hand.

I look forward to seeing your progress on this and, other projects.

I would presume you already have the "Hayes" information -

I did see this article from "etrailer" about towing an electric brake trailer with a semi tractor.
Thought it might be interesting to ask the group their thoughts on this setup versus the Jackelopee.

If none of the above helps, I apologize and give you a picture of Olaf at the beach.  :)

They are a big fan out of little single wire connectors.  Should be through the upper dash panel and come right out of the main harness bundle.  Technically they are Packard 56 series but 1/4" spade fits.

Couldn't find an internet pic of them, but did run across one of the brake light switch - even circled!

I forgot to say that if you use one of the spare power breakouts and are going to install the brake controller with a circuit breaker then you can just put a breaker into the fuse position that you were going to add anyway..

https://www.waytekwire.com/item/46773/EATON-s-Bussmann-Series-22120-300-ATC-ATO-Circuit/

If you use the main cab circuit breaker stud for power then you have to splice something inline of your power wire.  Probably the same breaker and an ATO fuseholder.

I was also thinking about your inverter.  You are a pretty good match for the Phillips & Temro kit.  I know more $ for less watts of what you can DIY, but all the harnesses are already made and you just click it all together.  You don't make any splices and you can't cross anything up.  Can't go wrong.  There are additional y-harnesses you can get to add a 2nd outlet and different length harnesses can be bought to put the outlets anywhere.

https://phillipsandtemro.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/30349-PT-LIT0019P_cab_sellsheet_LR.pdf

To get power from battery to inverter you get a HPDM and a 250A Megafuse.  Tie that to something in the battery box.

https://www.waytekwire.com/item/46319/Littelfuse-880195400-Sealed-HPDM-600A/

Now Ebay the Peterbilt inverter harness.  Put the ring terminal end on one of the outputs of the HPDM and cut the slot in the sleeper floor for the other end.  I'll have to figure out the # of the mating harness that goes from floor to inverter.  Buy that, lock them together, and done.  Again, no way you can cross them up and burn anything down.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/P92-9042-3100-PACCAR-PETERBILT-BATTERY-CABLE-WIRE-HARNESS/361884197765?epid=504723081&hash=item5441faa385:g:FHIAAOSwopRYgOM2&vxp=mtr

That's probably the easiest way and it is all assembly work without any harness building work.  KWNW in Marysville could probably install it pretty easy as they've dealt with it all as options for almost 10 years now too.  But I'm sure you can do it!

Howdy Scrap,

THANK YOU, for the wealth of information.  That's a lot to digest and I am sure it will be of help to many.  It's warmed up but it's still raining, I haven't even found the fuse box on the truck yet, I think it's on the lower left side of the cab but with the rain I can't work with the door open, I want to be a snow bird so bad.

Hey Dave,

Have you considered talking to the boys at Evergreen Diesel in Monroe?  I think that's the name, anyway it's the guys that used to work over at Dynamite Diesel that went out on their own several years back.  Very good possibility that they can help you with this.

Howdy Joe,

I have contacted the guy who wired my semi-street legal monster Jeep that I used to terrorize the countryside with, I think he will give me a hand installing the Jackalopee, wiring and running the air line to the brake controller is what I am going to be looking to have help with next.  A combination of the constant rain and having a worn out-gimpy 69 and 5/6th year old body is making this difficult, I just can't bend or wiggle into small cramped spaces like I used to, getting old ain't for sissy's but I am starting to feel like one.:(  Thanks for the tip, if I can't get something else going I'll give them a call but I think they are more into hot rod pickup trucks then they are real trucks.

Hey Dave,

I remember that monster, bet there are times you miss it to.  LOL  I took my old 97 Dodge to them several years ago and they were more focused on just plain old diesel mechanics.  They had several delivery trucks in there as well as a couple of pickups.  They told me they had no intention of ever adding a dyno.  Just wasn't the direction they wanted to go at that time.  Since I have since sold the truck I have no need to visit them again, but just thought I would thorw them out there as a possibility for you.

Trust me I understand the old gimped up thing.  There is no such thing as getting this 74 year old body into some of the places I used to get.  LOL

If your in the area in April, you should contact Paccar about having your truck on display during their Open House at the test facility up near Burlington.

Howdy Joe,

Yes, I do often times miss the "Animal" as most folks called my Jeep but the good folks who rule the Peoples Republik of Washington, thought it best to lock up nearly the entire State rather then let us surfs enjoy the use of its thousands of miles of logging roads for recreational activity.  Buts that's another story for another time, I hope to have the Pete finished in time to use it to drag my toy hauler to Moab in April for the annual Ural gathering that takes place there.

Howdy All,

Today, I ventured where I have NEVER gone before, so far nothing has caught on fire. :D

I have talked my friend Jay into helping me with the Jackalopee, he is quite busy now so it will be sometime within the next couple of weeks before we get it done.

I took the brake controller out to the truck and started to see if I could find a place to mount it where it would be out of the way yet easy to get to and use, I found what I think is the perfect spot, on the drivers side of the shifter tower.  This works well as one of the two needed mounting holes is already in place on the shifter tower, here's a photo of where the brake controller will be mounted, it's temporarily held in place by one of the shifter tower screws.

fullsizeoutput_303a-L.jpg

I took the CB mounting panel out of the cab roof but I won't be able to mount the CB up there as the amp-watt kicker mounted to the back of it  hits the windshield and holds the CB to far forward to use the panel mounting surface.  That's OK as I'll mount the CB on top of the dash and hang the GPS and back up camera from the CB mounting panel so all will be well in the end.

fullsizeoutput_303b-L.jpg

Next I got brave and started to take the dash apart, everything was going well until one of the screws that holds the bottom of the main panel would not come loose, I soaked it with PJ-Blaster and will try it again tomorrow.

fullsizeoutput_303c-L.jpg

Next I took the gauge panels loose, I was hoping I could get at the air line that goes to the air application gauge but it's nearly impossible to even see the line let alone tap into it.

fullsizeoutput_303d-L.jpg

I have conned "Scrap" into helping me install the brake controller, he's busy for a couple of weeks so in the mean time I am going to work on getting the nessisary gauge and dash panels out of the way so running the air line and wires will be easier when the time comes to do it.

So this thread is probably going to go silent for a while but I'll revive it with photos and commentary as the work is done.  My sincere THANKS to everyone who has participated in this thread, be sure to watch for it to become active again as I'll post photos to show how it was done, with luck that information may  be of future use to someone.

I have only got a couple of months before that happens, March 24th is the big day, old injuries those earned whilst having  FUN and those incurred trying to win hearts and minds are really raising havoc my ability to work on stuff like I used to.  However, I will endeavor to persevere as long as I am able.  I have waited a long time to be a dirty old man, now I are one.

That's how I got to mine. I removed wires to gauges, switches, etc to got it far enough out. I just labeled them so as not to mix up.

Howdy Glenn,

If I can get the very bottom plastic dash panel off, I should be able to EASILY install the "T" into the air application gauge line, there is no way I want to disconnect all those gauges and switches.

I didn't have to take many off. You may have enough slack to not to. It was a yellow line also.

Howdy Glenn,

Without disconcerting the gauges the panel will not move any further from the dash then it is in the photo, there's not enough room to get in there with tools to loosen the nut that holds the air line to the rear of the gauge, nor it there enough room to install the "T" even if I could get the line disconnected.  The air line going to my gauge is 1/4" diameter and black in color as are all the air lines behind the dash.

I am going to continue working on getting the lower dash panel off, if I am successful in doing that the job will be much easier, that is also where the accessory power points and circuit breakers are located which I'll need to tap into to supply power to the GPS, CB, back up camera and Jackalopee.

Howdy noteven,

I think but I don't know, that the trailer service line is inside of the steering column cover, my internet search skills have been maxed out, I looked all over youtube and the Peterbilt site, have asked  questions on a couple of trucker forums I can find very little information on this truck.  I talked to Scrap, today on the phone if I understood him correctly I think I'll find easy access to the air line and power if I can get the bottom dash panel off.

Here is your parts list from Waytek:

Obviously you wouldn't get the battery cable, blue wire, or the loom from Waytek since you don't need 100ft of each.  There's gotta be somewhere out there that has 10ft chunks of SGX and loom.  But at least in the description you know what they are.

If you want to add outlets then get the Temro 850- 0633 Cab Power kit and it bolts right in.  You have to buy the optional outlet and power cord if you want a 2nd or 3rd outlet.  For the time being you plug the external harness into your inverter and it'll all work.  When you get your charging inverter then the external harness and flip cover become your shore power outlet.  It should all be built with the orange loom but maybe get a roll just in case.

Time to tear that new truck up!

I'll give you a call this evening, let me know when would be a good time, looks like a shopping list for a project more then I envisioned then again I DON'T know anything about anything electrical.

The inverter I have is a 2,500 watt, "ROADPRO" "RPPI-2500W" I am going to see if I can find it on line and get some specs.
