RickS Posted April 12, 2017 Report Posted April 12, 2017 I just recently did may first service on my truck. It has just over 23K miles from new purchase. When I picked it up from the dealer noticed the signal light sound was not working and this is also the warning buzzer sound speaker for low air pressure. Called the dealer and as expected 1 year warranty has expired and was quoted $1250.00 plus labour to replace it. I kinda laughed with the service manager that the speaker made it as far as the first oil change. So, I guess a truck in commercial service would not pass inspection because low air warning sound must function. I don't require inspection for a motorhome here in our province but for peace of mind before spending that much money ordered a $4.95 speaker from Digi-key and will solder it to the board when it arrives tomorrow. If it works it will save me over $1200.00. Rick & Carey,Excel W41GKE Wild Cargo Toyhauler Volvo 730, D13, I-shift, 500/1850Brabus Smart Car
beyerjf Posted April 12, 2017 Report Posted April 12, 2017 A lot of Volvos have buzzers(speakers) that have given it up. As long as you have a light on the dash that is telling you the same information, low air pressure, at least in the US you are still OK. Several friends of mine that have Volvos just laughed at the $1200 number. I believe the same speaker provides the click click click for the turn signals. They just do without the noise. RickS Posted April 12, 2017 Author Report Posted April 12, 2017 Jeff, I am not sure if it would pass inspection here but the Volvo service guy said it would not in their shop. If the new speaker works it will turn out to be a 1 hr job to solder and put things back together. Rick & Carey,Excel W41GKE Wild Cargo Toyhauler Volvo 730, D13, I-shift, 500/1850Brabus Smart Car
MrSeas Posted April 12, 2017 Report Posted April 12, 2017 Rick did you run the "speaker test" in your diagnostics screen? Did you get a fault code?
RickS Posted April 12, 2017 Author Report Posted April 12, 2017 Hi Scott, No fault code. Never even ran speaker test. Just put a ohm meter on the the speaker. Rick & Carey,Excel W41GKE Wild Cargo Toyhauler Volvo 730, D13, I-shift, 500/1850Brabus Smart Car
noteven Posted April 12, 2017 Report Posted April 12, 2017 I drove a '68 KW dubbya 9 that had a red metal flag arm that dropped down out of the bulkhead above the windshield to warn of low system air psi's... when the psi's were safe you reached up and reset it. I think there mighta been a buzz aire too.... That KW was old and I was quite young at the time "Are we there yet?" asked no motorcycle rider, ever.

I also remember he was sleeping and when the alarm went off he started moving his right foot around and complaining about not being able to get the air pressure up........
RickS Posted April 12, 2017 Author Report Posted April 12, 2017 Well....just got a call from my dealer they said that they would give me some "goodwill" toward the job so it would "only" cost me $887.56 because of the 23,000 miles on the odometer. That was nice of them!! That is one downside to the standard commercial warranty the 1 yr or 100K mile warranty is not really suited to the RV lifestyle. I do have engine / emission / sensor harness coverage for 5 yrs that cost $4000.00 at time of purchase. Fed-Ex should be here with the speaker today so will post the results later. RickS Posted April 12, 2017 Author Report Posted April 12, 2017 Here is a picture of the speakers that just showed up. Ordered a spare one for the future. Rick & Carey,Excel W41GKE Wild Cargo Toyhauler Volvo 730, D13, I-shift, 500/1850Brabus Smart Car
RickS Posted April 13, 2017 Author Report Posted April 13, 2017 Well after tough day stuck in mud trying to get the RV out of the storage yard I figured since I got the new speaker I'd put it in. and this is the result..... a couple of hour of work and a $4.95 speaker saved about $880.00 after Volvo's goodwill offer. Turned out to be a good day after all! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9YxTzcyDDo Rick & Carey,Excel W41GKE Wild Cargo Toyhauler Volvo 730, D13, I-shift, 500/1850Brabus Smart Car
MrSeas Posted April 13, 2017 Report Posted April 13, 2017 Awesome work! Did I miss the "low air warning" sound in the youtube?
RickS Posted April 13, 2017 Author Report Posted April 13, 2017 Didn't want to start the truck.....to cold. I think it comes on when started. I didn't have signal light tic tic sound before so figured that was it. Hmm! When I plug in the block and pan heater for a couple of hours I'll start it and see if it beeps. SIBERNUT Posted April 13, 2017 Report Posted April 13, 2017 In the old days........ when you ordered a truck, you could choose any 2 of 3 ways for a warning, flag, buzzer or light but must have 2. beyerjf Posted April 15, 2017 Report Posted April 15, 2017 Alas, somehow I just cannot see a "modern technician" taking out the cluster, warming up the old soldering iron and saving the customer a cool $1000. Speaking of that, does anyone have a rebuild kit for the Carter WA-1 carburetor on my friend's Studebaker? Speaking of that, does anyone have a rebuild kit for the Carter WA-1 carburetor on my friend's Studebaker? Jeff, Maybe .......just maybe I might have a few Carter kits back in the far dusty corner of the boy-cave........old man Smith that I worked for in high school days got a big contract from the Wester Auto Stores chain (bet ya heard that name in a week or two) any how huge truck loads of single barrel Carters and Stromberg carbs arrived to the point that I was working before and after school hours..........anyhow Mrs Smith forbid any work at the carb rebuild shop on Sunday's so......old man Smithe would have me trace a hundred or so carbs home Saturday night to have for homework on Sunday........Grumps would delight in letting me sleep in to 04:30 Sunday morning and then dragging me outa bed to start my day of.......home work.......back in the day the wholesale rebuilder supply companies made "master-rebuild-series" kits.......these kits contained enough gaskets, needle & seats, and accelerator pumps to rebuild TEN of any carbs of a given series ........IF........real BIG IF......you knew what carb needed what ov the excess parts contained in the huge kits........don't get me started on the float levels for a given carb serial number.........oh by the way.........EVERY.......EVERY......darn carb had to pass the flow bench test so......IF and WHEN I screwed up.......I got the carb back for me to rebuild right on my own time since I had already been payed for my bad rebuild time....... Now if I can't find enough scrap Carter parts for your buddy ya might want to try the modern solution that John uses..........just get the Trunk-Monkey-Carter-Carb-Version........(see below)..... Drive on.........( don't forget to flair out the Accellerator pump leather and coat with fuel-lube before inserting in the pump well.....)
