Second Chance
In a couple of weeks we'll be leaving Las Cruces, NM, to eventually end up at the Jojoba Hills Escapees park at Aguanga, CA. The last time we did this, we were stopping in San Diego to visit family first, so we just followed I-8 into San Diego before going north to Temecula. This time, however, we're not stopping in SD. My question is this: how feasible is CA S2 from just west of El Centro until it meets 79 near Aguanga with a 36' fifth wheel? It looks like it follows the valleys pretty well but is two-lane. I don't like to have 20 cars backed up behind me! If you don't think S2 is the way to go, what would you suggest? 2gypsies
I may be thinking of the incorrect road as you but we've taken S2 at Ocotillo and it is easy from the interstate to Borrego. If you're talking from Borrego Springs to Aguana then you'll have a steep uphill to 79. I think it's listed as S22 from Borrego. It's called Montezuma Grade and is 8% for 11 miles. We've done both directions and uphill is much better. Many RVers do it as Borrego is a popular destination in winter. Depends how you feel about the uphill with your truck. It's not a busy highway so having folks behind you should matter for that distance. S2 takes off I-8 about 12 or 14 miles west of El Centro and goes up through Scissors Crossing and Warner Springs. Borrego Springs is east of that on the other side of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and that range of mountains. MrSeas
As you mentioned it is two lane road all of the way. Not to many places to turn out if you get a group behind you. Nice slow going with pretty scenery. Lots of small family ranches and such. Limited services. Warning signs indicating "hitchpin to rear axle over 30ft. not advised" spaced along the route. Expect lots of twists and turns. Not a problem. I drive it a few times of the year using my HDT to pull my 36 ft 5er. I prefer to drive it during the daylight to keep the excitement level low. Shouldn't be a problem if you take care and watch out for the " other guy".
bobsallyh
Rob L, we go that way when we leave Yuma with a dually crew cab and 38' fiver. No problem. You will probably see numerous trucks hauling hay for hay burners going both directions.

"Steep?" I just looked at flattestroute.com and there's one place that's just shy of 10% (uphill)! Rob Rob, those of us with a HDT can negotiate steep hills a little better than most other vehicles given the power to weight ratio, gearing and Jake brakes that these trucks have. We just need a little more room to maneuver at times and a wee bit longer campsite. ? 2023 Thor Magnitude XG32

"owner to weight ratio" was pretty funny! I struggle with that a lot!
