reed and elaine
We are spending five nights at the Rancho San Nicholas RV Park in San Cristobal de las Casas. There was an RVpark for larger rigs that closed down several years ago and this is the only place left. It is quite nice but the Churchs' book (aka bible for camping in Mexico) warns that no vehicle longer tha 24' can maneuver through the streets of the town to get here. Trailers would be impossible. The other rigs that have bee through are pickup campers on high clearance vehicles. All of them (other than ourselves) are Overlanders headed to Guatemala and most to Chile. We start heading north tomorrow up east coast to Puebla and to west coast starting at Puerta Villarta
coachmac9
Just curious, is that area considered safe for tourists now? We were down that way almost 20 years ago and were told it was definitely not safe for travel. I'm guessing a lot has changed since then if you are staying there for 5 days!!! reed and elaine
Singeing We were told not to take the Palenque to San Cristobal road but most of the folks we me at Rancho SAN Nicholas RV park went that way. Locals did take over the toll both on the Tuxtla Guitterez side of the toll road yesterday and asked for the normal 50 peso ($2.50) toll. They were in a jovial mood. There were two bored Federal Police 100 metres away looking bored. This is unfortunate since Chiapas is gorgeous. The locals could make fortunes in eco-tourism but choose not to
coachmac9
I agree, it is a beautiful area and they could make a fortune if they could develop the tourist industry and make it safe for travelers. We went to Aquismon instead and helped at a medical mission and just fell in love with the people and beautiful countryside.
