Rent a HDT?

Is it possible to rent a HDT to move a rig? I'm going to be stationary for awhile, active duty Navy, till I retire. So I'm wondering if it's possible to rent a HDT or a larger pickup set up for towing a larger 5er. Anyone ever done this heard of this, seen this? Any advice or opinions? I feel that hiring someone to move the 5er defeats the purpose of having one lol.

Check with Ryder or Penske. Realize though an HDT will have a commercial hitch and you may run afoul DOT and have a lot of explaining to do why you aren't commercial.

Check with a tow truck company that pulls the big rigs. Some of the tow trucks have a hitch attachment they can put on their wheel lift to yow a 5th wheel.

 

You probably will not find some with an RV HDT that will lease it out as that would make them commercial. Also insurance companies may not like it.

It will cost you but try the following site/service. I haul RVS on the weekend for extra cash, someone on there will relocate your rig for you. We are AD AF, doing the same as you... awaiting retirement.

The reason I asked is because the wife and I are tossing around the idea of moving into a 5er to save money. Currently living in base housing and we're tired of watching the BAH go to someone else. We want our own stuff, our own place, and an ability to travel. Since we'd be stationary till I transfer, we're trying to weigh if a truck is really needed or if we can wait till I transfer to buy. I want a HDT because I'm also looking down the road to when I retire and we can travel a lot more. I thank y'all for the willingness to help out. I was just seeing if it was possible. If I rented one, how would that be commercial use?

Yep, your story is remarkably similar to ours. We were rambling around in a big ole' base house watching our BAH float away. When our son went off to college, we got a wild hair and bought a bigger/nicer than expected 5'er. We have been full timing for 2 years now and still AD. I originally bought an older Duramax just to make sure we liked RV'ing. Life has been grand and as retirement gets closer, just last month I upgraded to a new-to-me but still used Dually. We have been hosts at a couple bases and really enjoy it but cannot wait to hit the retirement button to do some serious traveling. The bucket list grows everyday! Give us a shout if you have any questions. These forums are an amazing tool to get help and advice!

Who ever rents a HDT would need a Class A and insurance for it.

If your looking to just move it once in awhile for now.

I would check with a nearby RV dealer, most of them use outside haulers for moving and delivering trailers. That would be cheaper then renting a HDT

So here is a question that we can help the BB with. In his other topic, that's running, he either wants to buy the 5'th and move it from Washington state to Florida, or have it shipped. When he originally posed his question, he just said can I rent an HDT..... not rent and drive one cross country. If some was in need to move a new trailer from a dealer to their home, say up to 100 miles, many people would lend a hand. But cross country is a different story, insurance, fuel, time etc come into play. So as a professional U-ship transporter here are 2 scenarios- BB's 5th- Washington State to Florida. And a 12ft utility trailer with a 4wheeler on it- Bismarck ND to Atlanta Ga. Not down to the penny but it would give folks insight on how much it cost to move a rig. This question gets asked many times so this may help others.

Ironically, I was just thinking about this on the way in to work today. The best part about owning a HDT is actually towing the 5er. I was thinking about it more from the commercial side, though.

 

What are your thoughts on the viability of a 5er moving service? Clearly, this would be a commercial venture, but I was thinking along the lines of someone building a HDT setup with a good air ride hitch, Smart car platform, etc, specifically for the purpose of moving other people's trailers. This type of service would be great for full timers that stayed in the same place for a month or two (or more) at a time. All you would need to do is schedule your move. Then the moving service could swoop in, hook up your trailer and transport it to the next location. They could even set it up and have it all connected when you got there, allowing you to drive in your POV from campground to campground.

 

Oddly enough, the loading, setup, and transport of RV'ing are probably my favorite parts of the process. That's when the true adventure takes place.

Very interesting Idea. Especially for a "retired" trucker or the like. Interestingly, I've known a lot of older guys who deliver RVs or specialized trucks (I live pretty near the Vactor factory) around the country...this wouldn't be significantly different. Doubt if you could make a living on it..but if you had the rig, the time, and wanted to make some "casino" money....

Interesting idea but when I was at Hutch and my hitch was broken I was going through plans A,B,C,D. Plan D was having my rig towed home. The cost was over $1.00/mile round trip so from Hutch to Knoxville was $2,200. So a full timer moving cross country two or three times per year could face significant costs BUT it may be cheaper than owning and maintaining their own HDT. Need some bean counters to chime in.

Luckily enough, I don't think you would have had to go past plan B to continue the trip.
