oscarvan Posted November 11, 2016 Report Posted November 11, 2016 For the last 4 years we've operated a Chevrolet dually with diesel either pulling a Heartland Cyclone fifth wheel, or carrying a Lance truck camper. The Cyclone was for our spring and summer vacations, for a total of 6 weeks. The Lance was for weekend trips to, usually, spots too tight to get the Cyclone in. As we all know every configuration has it's pros and cons. The pro of the fiver was that it was relatively cheap per square foot, and that the truck was used for many other tasks. The truck camper was neat because it stored out of the way and has no registration/inspection. For the varied uses this all worked well for us. Also, with the kids I wanted them in the steel box with seat belts on, hence a truck. What I absolutely disliked was the ride. 4000-4500 pounds of TC or pin weight from the fiver makes for a harsh ride. After all it's a truck and all the leaf springs don't give easily. No matter that I had bags on the axle, a trailer saver air hitch and an air pin box..... And while the Lance was built pretty darn well, the Cyclone was an absolute disgrace. I cannot even begin to talk about the shortcuts and shoddy workmanship. This unit will not EVER make it to the 20 year mark. Sooooooo, time to shuffle it all around. We're trading all three in on a nice class A. Not too big (39ft) and a nice air ride diesel pusher...... We're looking forward to a better built, better riding unit. And now the kids are gone I think it's OK to carefully get up and make a quick bathroom visit or get something cold out of the fridge. I'll post a pic when we get it. Meanwhile, I'll be listing a Trailer Saver air ride fifth wheel hitch...... Previously a 2017 Forest River, Berkshire 38A, "The Dragonship". https://dragonship.blog/
