Mileage vs. ECM?

Idling.

Edit: Brain fart. I was thinking engine hours vs odometer mileage.

I have been wrong before, I'll probably be wrong again.

Could the ECM have been replaced?

Idling would show up as idle hours, not a difference in odometer miles.

when the engine is overhauled they typically reset the engine miles to zero. But the chassis miles remain unchanged.

I agree with Jeff. That big a difference would indicate an overhauled engine, as first choice guess....

It may mean a new ECM, in which case the idle hours would be exceptionally low.

If it was a new ECM all values would be the same. Generally even the dealer or manufacturer is not allowed to tamper with any value that is chassis miles, i.e. odometer for the obvious reasons. If something is replaced which changes the odometer, some states require it to be noted on the title. This happened to me when my truck had 249K miles on it and the dashboard module had to be replaced. My ECM has the correct value, the dashboard module reads 249k miles less than the ECM.

When they dropped the reman engine in, transferred the ECM from the old engine, they reprogrammed ECM to reflect 0 miles/hours for the engine but couldn't change anything about chassis miles.

Could be the odometer is in km and the computer in miles. Was it out of Canada? That is very close to the metric conversion.

The instrument panel on the Freightliner can be changed to either KM or Miles by customer at will. I sometimes change mine when I go into Canada just for the fun of it. You Volvo guys can tell me if that is also possible. That might account for this one.

The displayed (electronic) odometer miles can be changed on most Volvo's (the new ones).....but the physical (mechanical) speedometer remains the same. :)
