skp51443
If you stay on the main roads there is no problem. Pay attention to the way this route bypasses the Phoenix metro area, the turn at the Lake Pleasant avoids some really horrible traffic that you'll hit if you go into the metro area. https://www.google.com/maps/dir/35.0983646,-106.7219237/34.104962,-112.8310943/@34.7845641,-111.6477619,7.38z This route has a lot less freeway and more scenery but is more of a challenge to drive. I haven't been that way for a few years so hopefully someone else has and can comment on it. https://www.google.com/maps/dir/35.0983646,-106.7219237/34.104962,-112.8310943/@34.4802895,-112.5840314,10.38z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m10!3m4!1m2!1d-111.2467758!2d34.5945432!3s0x872c2e6135af1ab7:0xb507f0e721e23453!3m4!1m2!1d-112.6869412!2d34.3344721!3s0x80d32c73660b2cbf:0x177b56e9c8745163!1m0!3e0
trailertraveler
One road that I would not recommend driving with the RV is AZ-89A from Prescott Valley to Flagstaff. There are two challenging sections, one between Prescott and Clarksdale through Jerome and the other North of Sedona through Oak Creek Canyon. It is a beautiful scenic drive but not well suited for large vehicles.
2gypsies
You have a few choices but definitely don't take 89A just west of Flagstaff, AZ into Sedona. You're talking in February so you'll need to watch the weather forecasts carefully. I-40 can be treacherous in a snow/ice storm. The highway was closed for us at the end of April one year. So...if I-40 looks clear for a few days, take it west to Exit 146 at Ash Fork, Az - west of Flagstaff. Take 89 south (different than the above-mentioned 89A) into Prescott and then get off of 89. Do not take it any further. Instead, head toward Iron Springs/Skull Valley and take that highway south until it reaches 89 again. Then continue on 89 into Congress and the Escapee park. Or...At Flagstaff and I-40, get on I-17 south - again watch the weather even for this northern area on I-17. You can get off at Cordes Junction, Exit 262 and pick up 69 into Prescott and then do the above via Iron Springs/Skull Valley. Or.. Take I-17 south out of Flagstaff to Exit 223 at Cave Creek, AZ (on the north side of the Phoenix area). Pick up Hwy 74 west taking you into Wickenburg and then 60/89 north to Congress. If weather is really nasty for a week forecast (rarely), then head south to I-10 and continue into the Phoenix area - a lot more miles and more Phoenix/Tucson traffic. Have a great trip!
