Stan Wright
On a Generation 1 Volvo, when the hood is fully opened are there straps that stop the hood from tilting or is that done by the hinges themselves? I can't find anything online about it. I'm looking at a truck online and the hood tilt is limited by chains on each side. He said it is because the factory straps broke but I'm not so sure. Alie&Jim's Carrilite
Our Gen 1 is a 1998 and it has shocks, like what are on a hatch back.
SIBERNUT
There should be big gas springs attached at the frame and on pivot balls inside the front of the hood. They will tear out if the pistons loose their resistance & the hood drops on opening (careless driver). Look real careful around the hinge box & hood pivot ball, if that area is broken it's hard to fix correctly.
Stan Wright
...Look real careful around the hinge box & hood pivot ball, if that area is broken it's hard to fix correctly. Thanks for the replies. That was my concern. In one of the pictures there is a ~4-5" crack in the hood in the area of the passenger-side hood hinge. My suspicion was the chains were bearing the weight of the hood and protecting a cracked mount.

That is very, very difficult to fix correctly. It can be done, but it is a pain. IF you pursue that truck have it repaired - PROPERLY - first, and subject to your approval. SIBERNUT
FWIW- If you do buy this truck (or any) with structural weakness such as splits, broken panels, etc. I have a bumper made from 4 others, and a hood with a couple of stress cracks in the hinge box area. I drilled several holes in the inner structure of both, shot it full of expanding foam (after whatever repairs could be done). Made the hood a lot stiffer and the bumper, too. Doesn't tend to "work" as much going down the road.
Broncohauler
I'd stay away. If they went that cheap on the hood shocks, What else did they NOT repair or cheap out on??
Alie&Jim's Carrilite
Speaking of hood struts/shocks.... Opening the hood this morning I heard a seal pop and one side of the hood decided to be floppy.... Rod has extended out of the tube for some odd reason.... Best place to order new struts? Or do the auto stores carry the correct length and lb rating just for another application?

Alie&Jim's Carrilite
Found a part number- Volvo Truck Hood Tilt Shock Absorber 20725387Seems like this part number does not cross reference to any other application. Amazon is currently the cheapest $40 with shipping, E-Bay, Class-8 Parts, and several others are all in the $42+ shipping.
tyates007
Would someone be willing to provide me some measurements for the strut listed above? What is the body length and total extension length? This is for a min Volvo application just wondering if it will work. Thx
