Jemstone
We are planning to drive to Alaska next summer. I have a high degree of paranoia regarding moose. While living in Alaska many years ago I was traveling about 60 mph when two moose walked onto the highway right ahead. I went between them with little clearance on either side. My ex and I each leaned away from the moose next to our sides and we touched shoulders. I know the trees are cut back from the highways in much of Alaska, but that's not the case on some of the Alaska highway. Thus, I'm going to install a grill guard. The guards range from shinny but light gauge metal to Australian roo bars. Most install on the existing bumper. The expensive ones replace the bumper. My goal is to have enough protection to drive away after a collision with a moose. A moose will damage the grill, but the guards should protect the radiator. Any suggestions? greenacres
HERD road train gives the best protection. But they're heavy and you have to lower them to open the hood. There are a few videos on line.
Imurphy907
You need a heavy bumper. Just think of the forces involved with hitting a 1000 lb animal doing 65mph. In all the years of driving in AK I have glanced a moose one with my '03 Sierra. And my wife had a moose calf run into our VW Jetta while at a full stop. Damn things just do what they want. Darryl&Rita
Herd is good, Bandit Bar is local to us, and offers a video test. No matter which brand you go with, get the complete front end kit, or be ready to buy some aero fiberglass pieces. Lots of trucks up here run without any protection, with no ill effects. The wildlife mostly moves during dawn and dusk times, which in the North, is usually well outside normal RV travel hours.
greenacres
We found that a guard with a cow catcher prevents the animal from going under the truck and causing mechanical damage . We use the super road train and road train systems but they are heavy and take some muscle to raise and lower them.
maveric
These hold up very well. I have one very similar on my truck. The pick-up versions handle deer/elk quite regularly around here. http://jacksbumpers.com/product_photos Ours, sorry about the crappy pic. This replaced to entire bumper. Morelli
Sandvgrilleguards.com has some great and field proven units. They are sharp looking, strong and functional. Have it on my truck.
Nigel
Don't forget to check with Gregg. Some of his trucks come with moose bumpers and he may be willing to work out a trade for that nice shiny chrome one you have. Nigel

Larry&Donna-AK
Happily I haven't been in a situation to test my "Ali Arc" I believe it will get the job when needed. http://www.hhrvresource.com/sites/default/files/Images/larrydonnaak_truck.jpg

You truck looks "at home" in Larry's shop. I do like the moose guard.
Alie&Jim's Carrilite
HeWhoknowslittle- Roger has a nice guard as well. Pull the center pin and the guard and hood tilt open. When his guard tilts, it opens the area in front of the wheels for easy access to the front of the engine on both sides.
Larry&Donna-AK
Nice pic. You truck looks "at home" in Larry's shop. I do like the moose guard. Thanks Jack...that's what I'm afraid of, being "at home in Larry's shop". Need to make one more trip to the shop. The Ali Arc has a removable pin with 2 screw-in eyelets on the front, easy to drop down and open the hood. Yes there is a lot of room to access the engine compartment when open. Hewhoknowslittle
My bumper has no eyelets, I opted for a slam latch for another 150.00. Very easy to open after pulling the tow pin and then opening the pull latch. Hope these pictures work. http://s42.photobucket.com/user/rogerjones218/Bumper/story Roger
