US Route 160 RVing conditions

Considering traveling US 160 from Tuba, AZ to Trinidad, CO. Have 40 foot 5th wheel pulled by Ram diesel. Is this route doable by this rig? Have done some routes that semis were advised to avoid and now wish to follow that advice whenever possible.

That route is definitely used by commercial trucks. It's a decent highway.

 

There is a downgrade going into Durango, CO for several miles at up to 6%. Of course, there's Wolf Creek Pass just east of Pagosa Springs, CO which you will have to climb and descend.

 

As far as whether you can do it, that depends on your driving skills, confidence level, and equipment.

I'm very familiar with the Colorado sections of hiway 160 and its used by 1000's of all types & sizes of RV's all summer. From Cortez to Walsenburg Co, the only real issue is climbing and descending Wolf Creek Pass. Its a long steep pass, but all good roadway with no white knuckle curves or drop offs. All kinds of RV's and trucks go up and down it. Just take it slow and use your engine brake and down shift the tranny, so you don't burn up the brakes. Hiway 160 is mostly 2 lane with some sections with passing or turning lanes. US160 is the major E-W highway across southern Co and gets heavy use. It passes through several small towns where the 65 mph speed limit suddenly drops to 40 or 30 or 25 through town, and those small town police depts. use speeding tickets as a significant revenue source.
