Canadian Border Crossing-- Sumas or Lynden, WA

Recommended Posts

In the past most every recommendation I have read, has been to cross from Washington state into Canada at Sumas, WA. In another topic there was a suggestion to cross at Lynden instead of Sumas.

Are there any additional recommendations about crossing at Lynden instead of Sumas?

Lynden is often less busy, so it is the one we take most often. But once we took it southbound and they were checking every vehicle thoroughly, so it took over an hour. They would not say why they were checking every vehicle and we knew not to ask. Sumas is a good crossing with big box stores just up the road on the Canadian side (Abbotsford) to buy the groceries you were not able to bring over.

Lynden is not 24 hour. I would use Sumas. Lynden is closer to Vancouver and many head there when the i-5 Crossing is backed up. Sumas is far enough east, they don't bother. You can also boondock in the Wal Mart on the Canadian side, just pass under the freeway and take the first left after the overpass.
