low on ultrashift

Try it and see... Low is usually 1st gear. Also can be used in other gears to alter the shift points. You need to find a safe area and "play" with your UltraShift. Some fleets have different software loaded to fit there needs. Try out different things and see what it does. It's pretty forgiving and usually won't let you hurt it. Just remember the clutch is "centrifugal" so a certain RPM needs to be reached to actuate it. Sort of like a go-kart I had as a kid!

It's a transmission shift map. If stopped your start gear will be 1st. If rolling it will use the lowest gear without over-revving. Good for long steep grades.

. . . and hi (let me wreck fast) mode.

It's hard to believe, but I've actually intentionally used Reverse High on my FreedomLine -- once. It's an "one time every seven years, whether you need it or not" kind of thing.

It fast a plenty in r1. Lol. I sat in front of hotel last night and got it up to 3rd. But then just backed up and parked. So it can. Got to go to dealership anyway. Will see if we can program to 3rd. 1&2 is just very low for our weight

Ours does not like us to use R2. It locks up and I have shut if off in gear and hope it resets (so far it has) so we no longer use R2. R1 is fast enough for us.

Our default starting gear is 2nd which I use when pulling fully loaded trailer. We can upshift to 3rd while sitting still and it will remember that starting gear until we either reset by down shifting while sitting still or turning the truck off normally. We use 3rd when we bobtailing. We tried 3rd with the trailer but felt it was bucking a little too much some times starting out.

We very rarely use manual mode. We bought a truck with the ultra shift to let it do the shifting not us.

On my Auto shift, Low holds the transmission in whatever gear you were in when you placed the shift lever to Low. Low will not allow the transmission to upshift, but it will allow it to downshift. I use it when descending grades. If it is a steep grade, as I crest the hill I place the shift lever into Low and I take my foot off the accelerator. The transmission will then hold that gear and allow the RPMs to increase as I start descending the hill. The Jake brake kicks in and holds me at a pretty constant speed. If the hill isn't that steep, I will even start to slow down. I then just tap the accelerator a little to disengage the jake and get me back to the speed I want to be at. If it is a very steep grade, as I begin to slow down I may even manually downshift to set my new highest gear. Again, while in Low, the transmission will not upshift. Once I get to the bottom of the grade, I put the shift lever back to Drive and continue on my way.

Hi Glenn - glad you got the brake system issue sorted.

Discover your truck's actual Ultrashift or Ultrashift plus model then visit Roadranger.com and look at the manuals for your transmission model.

I have not operated models with go kart clutches only 18spd MXP and VXP (heavy haul and heavier haul) programming which have automated "normal" clutches. L mode has particular function on those that may not relate to other models so I'll shaddap now :D

but the Roadranger website has a wealth of info...

Mine also has a hold position on it. I was not able to set my default start gear any higher than 2. After I move it to D I bump it up to third gear and it will remember that until I shut down or bump it to another gear at a stop. If I am bobtail and put it in hold, I am able to skip shift using the thumb switches on the shifter.

I don't have a lot of time today but I found nothing to tell me what unit I have.

Look on the drivers door jamb... All of your trucks info should be there including the trans model.

Didn't find that info. Told me manufacture date, serial, axles, tires, weights. Nothing about engine or tranny

Hi Glenn - suggest - have your VIN last 8 letters and numbers handy and call the parts dept at your local Freightliner dealer. Say you just bought your truck used and would like to confirm what transmission it left the factory with.
