breister
My wife and I are going to be down on the gulf coast near Biloxi the end of Feb. We are wondering about spending some time either in the Biloxi or maybe Gulf Shores area. Any suggestions about which is a nicer area to visit and any campground recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks much! Brian
Jim Gell
We are fairly new RVrs, so we have few places to compare, but the Rainbow Plantation Escapee Park in Summerdale, AL that we are at right now, is our favorite so far. Inexpensive, large site, great people, many social activities, shopping at both big box stores and quaint shops, good restaurants, and there seems to be plenty of things to see and do. Kirk W
I'd agree with the above post. We have spent time in the Biloxi area and while there are some nice areas, the main attraction there is the casinos which hold little of interest for us. They do have a nice beach. If you do stop at Rainbow Plantation, make a trip down to Foley to eat at the "Home of the throwed roll" and go hungry!
Big Greg
Our daughter lived in Biloxi a few years and when we stopped there felt the main attraction was all the casinos like Kirk said. The wide beach has nice white sand like Gulf Shores and the FL panhandle but the water was brown. We were told this was due to offshore sandbars. We have wintered in Gulf Shores 8 years. The Rainbow Plantation is a great SKP park but about 20 miles from the beach. There are many private parks closer to Foley & Gulf Shores & the beach. AL & FL have more places to eat and explore in our minds. Greg
markandkim
"Home of the throwed roll" and go hungry! Kirk, I thought Lambert's in Sikeston MO. was the home of the throwed roll.
bigjim
Lambert's has 3 locations I believe. Kirk is absolutely correct about the one at Foley. Just be hungry and pace yourself on the "pass-arounds" or you won't have room for your meal. I believe Sikeston is the hometown of the orginal cafe. 2gypsies
We liked Gulf Shores a lot. The state park is very nice with large sites and close to the lovely beach. There are many nice restaurants, shopping, fresh shrimp markets, good biking and even golf at the state park. You can take your car on a short ferry ride and from the exit point, explore up to Mobile. We've also stayed at the Escapees park in Summerdale which is also good but a fair distance from the beach area if that's what you're looking for. Kirk W
Kirk, I thought Lambert's in Sikeston MO. was the home of the throwed roll. They are, but in all three locations.
Mariner
I heard some lady was suing Lamberts because she was hit by one of the throwed rolls. I think it would feel like being hit by a large marshmellow. Besides that, Foley/Gulf Shores are two of our favorite places. We really enjoyed Gulf Shores State Park. But as mentioned a lot of great food, so bring your stretchy pants.
WeBeFulltimers
Also be sure to have lunch at "The Roadkill Cafe" while in the Gulf Shores area.

She won initially, but suit was overturned by a higher court. http://www.wsmv.com/story/29775197/woman-suing-lamberts-cafe Sounds like this woman is going to have to prove she got a detached cornea from being hit with a fresh-baked yeast roll. Brian Beside Gulf Shores State Park, Bella Terra is a favorite of ours too. Really nice people running the place, and one of the best fitness centers I've used.
