-Claimed- Garmin Nuvi 52 GPS - Used - Free!

Partial "pass it on" for a recent kindness from one our members... I have a used Garmin Nuvi 52 GPS unit I used as a backup when my main GPS went down. Perfect working order. Some very light abrasion scratches on the shiny black trim along the bottom, but otherwise is scratch free and the touch screen is perfect.

You can find stats and reviews here. It comes with the GPS unit and Garmin auto charger only, but the manual and Basecamp software are available free from Garmin. Not mentioned there is that it only has a 2gb internal memory, but has a microSD slot that can take up to an 8gb card for more POI and logging data.

It is a discontinued model, but is still supported by Garmin.

I'm not entirely sure if it's the "Lifetime Maps" model, but I updated the software and maps yesterday. Previously the North America maps said 2014, and now says 2016. That might just be a "one-off" update though (dunno how that works exactly). Pardon my photography skills. ;)

I tried to catch the scratches along the bottom shiny plastic. They REALLY show in the photo, but aren't that obvious.

It's not for "resale", please. First come first serve, however, I have to warn you... I am easily bribed with homemade goodies (jerky, jam, jerky, dried fruit, jerky, dry rubs, "nifty" handicrafts, etc.). :P:lol:

Shipping might be slow. I probably won't be going in for grocery until the latter part of this coming week.

On edit: Oops.. PM here if you can put it to good use.

It's a good thing that you updated it when you did, Yarome. It's definitely a Lifetime Maps model, or you wouldn't have been able to update it for free. On models with the Lifetime Maps feature, Garmin defines the "lifetime" of the device as being either when they deem it to be obsolete/unsupported or when it isn't updated for two years (eight consecutive missed updates), so by updating within two years (quite possibly just in time), you've extended its life.

That said, unless I'm mistaken, a transfer of ownership voids a Lifetime Maps subscription. The update that you applied to it is very recent, though, so the device will be useful to its new owner for several years to come, even though it likely won't be eligible for free updates.

Please don't construe this post as demeaning your offer in any way. Even though the second owner will not likely retain the LM feature when they take possession of the device, it's still a very generous offer on your part, and the device will be quite useful to its new owner. I'm posting only to make the potential acquirer aware that they likely won't have any more free updates available. If the new owner inclined to update it in the future, though, a new Garmin Lifetime Updates subscription is available on Amazon for $61.61, which would certainly have to be considered affordable when the device is free.

That very well may be... I dunno. I bought it about 8 months ago and I never registered it or hooked it up to the PC to check for updates. This time I used "Garmin Express" software. It read all the info from the device and showed the available updates, but there was no personal/owner info in the GPS and I opted not to register it since I knew I was passing it on. It MIGHT be that the update was allowed because it thought it was just "new old stock" recently purchased and they give you one free update??

Time will tell for the new owners, but I know Garmin doesn't have any registered owner info on this unit. But like you said.. it's as up to date as it can be with the 2016 maps.. for the moment. :)

Yes, there is always one "free" initial map update, even on non-LM models. That is likely what you applied to the device.

If you haven't registered it, then yes, the "new" owner should be able to register it with Garmin in their name, and if it's an LM model, they should still have the Lifetime Maps feature available to them. If not, then you've still conveyed it to them in the same condition as it would have been had they bought it new and done the initial update themselves.

and will take 3 or more hours no matter what computer you have.

I didn't keep track of the data usage, but updating the NT maps on this device didn't take much more than an hour. 30 minutes or so to download to my laptop, then I disconnected internet and it took.. ehh.. 45(?) minutes or so to update the GPS's map files via USB 3.0. I noticed a lot of .mpg files passing by... THAT had to be a mouthful. ;)

Sorry Yarome wasn't meaning to cast any disparaging remarks. I said above because I was going to update my maps today and the "details" showed 3gb of data to download and predicted 3 hours. I have a brand new Dell so hopefully will be quicker. Our internet is the Jetpack with 20 gb data so I'm waiting until the end of our cycle to see if I have enough data left. On edit I did upload the Garmin Express as I had purchased lifetimes maps when I bought my Nuvi several years ago. Guess it is "encoded" in the device because when I connected, it said when my last update was (over a year) and that I needed to update without asking for any identifying data other than a connected device.

BTW nice of you to offer this.

Not at all, not at all! Don't be silly. :P Now that you mention it... I seem to remember it DID tell me it may take up to several hours (I don't recall the exact estimate), but I think that is just some pre-programmed estimate based on average internet connection speeds. As the download progressed the little time counter adjusted itself downward and "actually" only took around 30 minutes. It had to have been a 'very' substantial download if it was maxing out my download speed for even that long.

I don't pay much attention to that sort of stuff since it has no bearing on "IF" I'm going to do it or not. KWIM? (It'll takes what it takes and cost what it costs... I don't wanna know. LOL)

It's a good point to bring up. If I was on mobile I would definitely plan a McD's or Starbucks trip and take a good book. :)
