I'm planning on driving to Adrian , Or. on or about Dec. 28, to pick up my new puppy from the breeder. I'm leaving SF Bay Area , luckily not pulling my travel trailer . I have a 4wd pick up w / snow tires ,chains and all, and think I'm prepared. My thougts are to travel I 80 to Winnemucca , then North on US 95 up towards Boise. Is this my best choice. Aside from the possibility of snow , what else should I be ready for?

It's the best option of the three that Google Maps outlines. Once you get on US-95 north of Winnemucca, just keep an eye out for the weather since that area can have snow. Be sure to fill up with fuel in Winnemucca since there is little between there and Jordan Valley.

One of the other options was staying on I-80 until Wells and then taking US-93 to Twin Falls and west on I-84 into Oregon. While this route would keep you on the Interstates for a longer period of time (and thus more chance of cleared roads in case of snow), it is also more than 200 miles longer.

Having driven all of these roads many times, the I-80/US-95 route would be my preferred route simply because of the mileage difference.

I would also suggest going through Winnemucca. In your travels, fuel at the Maverick in Winnemucca. It will be the cheapest fuel before you get to Idaho. As we head North to Boise we always have a lunch/bathroom break at the casino in McDermott. I believe it is called "The Last Chance". There is no other opportunity for food until you get to Jordan Valley, OR. Jordan Valley has a gas station/convenience store with limited food. After Jordan Valley your next fuel/food stop is a Chevron station in Marsing, ID. From Marsing you are about an hour to Adrian.
