hiljoball
Is there any information about when Hwy 58 (Tehachapi ) will reopen? Planning to head south and would like to take the Bakersfield - Barstow route to avoid LA Basin. John
Barbaraok
You can monitor CalTrans http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi to find out when it opens. Some talk of maybe by Thursday. Barb
hiljoball
Thanks Barb. I alrady have the link to Caltrans, but it just reports the closure - I was looking for an estimate of re-opening. days - weeks - months. John
Barbaraok
Try googling California Highway 58 closing and you will get things like this: http://www.scpr.org/news/2015/10/19/55120/cleanup-continues-after-mud-flow-on-state-route-58/ which indicates Thursday as an open date. Lou Schneider
Hwy 58 is reopened but there are reports of traffic generating dust in the mudslide area until all of the dirt can be worked out of the roadway. If this is a concern, climbing the Grapevine and taking 138 east is a very good alternative. The Grapevine gets the climb in elevation over all at once, 138 is a nice level road. Not too bad of a detour.
